KOMU-TV Established

On Dec. 21, KOMU-TV, with its newly constructed 794-foot tower, was signed on the air by Dr. Edward C. Lambert. Earlier in the year, on Jan. 15, the Federal Communications Commission had granted the University permission to operate a commercial television station. In 2008 KOMU-TV is still the only university-owned commercial network affiliate with a newsroom used as a training lab for students.
Dean Earl English and Professor Edward C. Lambert welcomed several distinguished guests for KOMU's dedication ceremony in early 1954 (top left). Lambert was the driving force behind KOMU, which provided programming from all four networks to Mid-Missouri residents and behind-the-scenes training for students.
