Doctoral Graduates Nearly Doubled; Numbers Followed National Trend
Due to the nationwide trend toward increased journalism research in the 1950s, the School experienced a near doubling of its total doctor of philosophy graduates. The School had produced about 25 PhDs from the beginning of the program in 1931 to 1959. From 1960-1969, the School produced another 22 PhD candidates. Professor William Stephenson helped energize research students and faculty in quantitative methods.
Both the master's and doctoral programs grew during the 1960s, and as a result, students spent more time researching among the files, books and newspapers in the Journalism Library.
