Fisher Assumed Deanship
Roy M. Fisher, editor of the Chicago Daily News, was appointed dean of the School of Journalism following the retirement of Dean Earl English. Fisher received a bachelor's degree in journalism from Kansas State University and had served as a lecturer at the Medill School of Journalism among other reporting and editing positions. Shortly after accepting the position, Fisher faced a crisis when unionized pressmen working for the Columbia Missourian went on strike. With assistance from local newspapers, publication continued through the one-week strike.
Roy Fisher served as dean from 1971 until 1982, a tenure marked by advances such as the founding of KBIA and the construction of Gannett Hall.
