New Diversity Efforts Established
|
The School sponsored its first three-week Urban Journalism Workshop in June 1971 for minority students from inner-city high schools. In 1972, the workshop was co-sponsored by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the Kansas City Star and Times and the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. In 1973, the Missouri Broadcasters Association sponsored a workshop on broadcasting. In 1978, the Black Journalism Student Association (BJSA) was formed to advise pre-journalism students and conduct workshops for black students. The group is now affiliated with the National Association of Black Journalists.
Recruitment and retention efforts by the Urban Journalism Workshop and BJSA slowly helped create greater diversity at the School.
