FOI Joined Pentagon Papers Battle
The Freedom of Information Center, headquartered at the School, filed suit for the release of the complete 47 volumes of the Pentagon Papers, the top-secret Department of Defense history of the United States' involvement in Vietnam. The New York Times published excerpts from the document in June 1971. Forty-three volumes were released; the last four were withheld for allegedly containing peace negotiations and prisoner exchanges. The U.S. District Court denied the request in 1972.
The release of the Pentagon Papers fueled existing anti-Vietnam War sentiment, as shown by this protest in Columbia that drew an estimated 5,000 people (top left). The Freedom of Information Center (center, bottom) fought for public access to the Pentagon Papers.
