The Missouri Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (MICAR), created in 1989, was renamed the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR) and administered by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE). Its mission was to help journalists learn how to use database analysis to improve their investigations. When MICAR founder Elliot Jaspin left in mid-1992, Brant Houston was hired as NICAR managing director.
