Technology Summit  (Registration Required)
There are 27 innovative ideas in the Technology Summit, all of which have the potential to influence journalism in the next century. You are welcome to switch from one track to another. There will be a five-minute break after each 15-minute presentation. You are invited to join the Technology Summit presenters from 2:45-3:45 p.m. in the Futures Lab and Technology Demonstration area of the Reynolds Journalism Institute for informal question-and-answer sessions.


Digital Storytelling Track

It's now been several years since the dawn of citizen journalism, with the public at large joining in the creation and distribution of stories in digital formats. In this track, learn how Reynolds Journalism Institute fellows, School of Journalism professors, students, alumni and media companies, small to large, are keeping their edge as the premier digital storytellers and embracing the social media and social advertising phenomenon.


Disruptive Innovation Track
Neff Auditorium, 204 Neff Hall

It may be hard to believe but Facebook and YouTube didn't exist five years ago. Yet these and other new companies have managed to permeate all aspects of society in their brief existence. The next wave of innovations may be discovered here as these nine presenters showcase promising technologies for news and advertising. Meet Missouri Journalism alumni and those spearheading venture-funded firms who are creating ways for media organizations to quicken their pace of innovation.


The Economics of the Future Track
Fisher Auditorium, 87 Gannett Hall

Data mining, social and consumer-generated media, mobile marketing and other new technologies offer new money-making and branding opportunities for media organizations and strategic communication agencies. The presenters in this track will share projects they have been working on, all designed to generate revenue while taking advantage of the public's constant demand for free news content and information.

The Technology Summit is an action-packed exhibition of the ideas, trends, tools, technologies and companies that are leading the way into 21st-century journalism. Leading technology experts and industry pioneers will preside over interactive presentations divided into three tracks: Digital Storytelling, Disruptive Technologies and Web 3.0 Economics. Guests will have the chance to see new technologies at work and visit with those who are shaping tomorrow's media.

Ambient Content Creator to Display Innovative Product Offering New Ways to Reach Customers Join Marc Kempter, BJ '86, of CORE in St. Louis for a sneak preview of Ambient Content, a new form of media that offers a personal expression of design, taste and style on screens in your home and in hotels, bars and restaurants. The session, "Ambient Content: Soothing The Savage Beast of the Digital Masses," will be held during the Sept. 12 Technology Summit held as part of the School's centennial/dedication celebration. Brian Storm Award-Winning Multimedia Specialist to Be Featured at Tech Summit Brian Storm, the president of MediaStorm, a multimedia production studio in New York City, will present a session at the Sept. 12 Technology Summit during the centennial/dedication celebration. MediaStorm's principal aim is to usher in the next generation of multimedia storytelling by publishing social documentary projects incorporating photojournalism, interactivity, animation, audio and video. Lewis A. Friedland Community Knowledgebase Offers Reporters and Editors a Rich Archival Resource Lewis A. Friedland of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present his next-generation software product, Community Knowledgebase, at the Sept. 12 Technology Summit. Community Knowledgebase uses the semantic Web to generate local community networks by "reading" a newspaper's own archives and finding deep links between people, places and events. Jon Cook, BJ '93 Digital Agency Executive to Present Survival Guide for Digital Marketers Jon Cook, BJ '93, president of digital interactive agency VML, will present a Technology Summit session Sept. 12 designed to provide a global perspective for how top brands are taking back digital ground to rise above the Web clutter. Cook will present new techniques for inhabiting social networks and applications, consumer generated media, gaming, mobile marketing and portable content such as gadgets, widgets, audio and video. Digital Consultancy to Illustrate Transformational Capacities of Social Media Executives from Rocket Fuel, a digital media consultancy based in New York City, will use the Sept. 12 Technology Summit to show examples from two recent projects that illustrate how socially fueled experiences are transforming big media editorial and consumption. Join Current TV's Amy Grill Sept. 12 as she shares the network’s unique storytelling approach, which includes viewer-created content (VC2) for news and advertising. Some of the 60 Missouri Journalism students who have been vlogging from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for Current will join the session, which is part of the centennial/dedication Technology Summit. Matt Thompson New Reynolds Fellow to Present a Look Back on Forward Thinking A Sept. 12 Technology Summit session will feature Matt Thompson, co-creator of the viral Flash video EPIC 2014 and the 2008-2009 Donald W. Reynolds Fellow. EPIC 2014, a vision of the last decade in media history -- set ten years in the future, found a massive viral audience online and garnered mentions in The New York Times, USA Today, the Atlantic Monthly, the Guardian and other worldwide news sources. Scripps Networks Interactive Executive to Discuss "Disruptive Innovation" in Real Estate On Sept. 12, join Channing Dawson, senior adviser to Scripps Networks Interactive to learn how HGTV capitalized on the growth of social networks and Web applications in the real estate market. Taste of Missouri to Showcase State Pride, Wrap Up Celebration On Friday, Sept. 12, guests can celebrate Missouri's heritage with the Taste of Missouri Mixer, a casual event featuring a hearty menu of local and regional products, from artisanal cheeses and local wines to farm-raised meats and seasonal produce. The evening will be an inspiring showcase of Missouri's finest products, followed by the celebration’s closing ceremonies. [More]

8 p.m. Famed Russian Poet to Perform Poem for Centennial/Dedication Sept. 12 On Sept. 12, one of the best-known and most widely published poets in the world, Yevgeny Yevtushenko will perform "The Lead Honorarium," a commissioned poem he wrote in honor of the centennial of the Missouri School of Journalism and the dedication of the Reynolds Journalism Institute.
