The Front Page portrays the rough-and-tumble, ethically oblivious journalism that prompted Walter Williams to found a journalism school to promote professionalism. Playwrights Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur were reporters in the chaotic 1920s Chicago era their play portrays, where a convicted murderer escapes and hides from authorities right in the city hall pressroom. Modern journalists may recognize something of themselves in the scoop-chasing deadline habits of ace reporter Hildy Johnson, managing editor Walter Burns and their competitors - all while laughing out loud.
The performance is sponsored by the Maplewood Barn Community Theatre, Mid-Missouri's nonprofit outdoor theatre company founded in 1973. It will be directed by Professor Emeritus Byron Scott and produced by Professor Lee Wilkins.
