Considered a national expert on communication law and libel, Professor Spencer respected and defended the role of journalists at the same time that he tried to improve the practice of journalism. His scholarship, teaching and public service activities focused on the advancement of the free and independent press through the world, a mission shared by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute. The family of Professor Spencer has created the Dale Spencer Free Press Studies Endowment to benefit the important work of the Reynolds Journalism Institute. In recognition of their generosity, a seminar room within the Institute is being named to honor Professor Spencer and his lifelong commitment to First Amendment freedoms.

  • Dedication of the Dr. Edward C. Lambert Seminar Room
    200-A Reynolds Journalism Institute

Legendary faculty member Dr. Edward C. Lambert saw the opportunity in the early 1950s to change the face of broadcast news in Columbia, Mo., and to a certain extent, the nation. As the founder of KOMU-TV/Channel 8, he brought television news to mid-Missouri and simultaneously created a laboratory to teach students broadcast journalism. Now, more than 50 years later, the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism will build upon Professor Lambert's pioneering vision as it develops and tests ways to improve journalism through emerging technologies and improved processes. Former students, friends and family of Dr. Lambert have created an endowment in his name to support the ongoing work of the Institute. To commemorate their generosity, a seminar room within the Institute is being named to honor the man who as an innovator, mentor and professor had a lifelong effect on his students and the world of broadcast journalism.
