Summer Media Workshops

Summer Media Workshops

High school students can explore journalism through two national workshops held each summer at the Missouri School of Journalism.

Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop

The Missouri School of Journalism, with the help of the Dow Jones News Fund, created the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop in 1971 to encourage high school students to consider journalism as a career.

Each summer, high school students from around the country gather on the University of Missouri campus to work under the guidance of professional journalists to produce stories, photos and broadcasts. The work of the MUJW students is published as an online publication called the Urban Pioneer.

Summer Media Workshop

A summer media workshop for high school students is sponsored each year by the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association. It is open to students interested in journalism who are entering their freshman year of high school through the summer before their freshman year of college. Students from all across the United States are welcome to attend.

Topics covered include sports writing, editorial leadership, convergent media, convergence writing, broadcast, design and digital photography. Sessions also are available for advisers.
