Degree and Year: BJ '02 (Magazine) Company: Ladies' Home Journal (Meredith Corporation) Title: Editorial Assistant/Junior Copy Editor City and State: New York What do you do? I assist our managing editor and executive editor with administrative duties, move copy and work on projects they assign. As a junior copy editor, I work as a fully functioning member of the copy department. In this role, I copy edit stories, proofread others' changes and help close stories. This requires working very late hours during our closing week. How did you get your job? The job was posted on mediabistro.com. I came in for an interview and a copy-editing test. I scored highest on the test of all the applicants, so I came in for a second interview. Best professional lesson learned at the J-School? For me, since my goal was to be a copy editor, the most important lesson was being familiar with my stylebooks. What would be your best advice to current students? When looking for a job, have someone design an eye-catching, professional resume for you. My roommate, a junior designer at a magazine, designed mine, and I'm sure that's what led to my first interview. What is your secret to success? A good work ethic. In your first job, be willing to help everyone out and do everything that is asked of you, plus more. Since I'm always willing to help other editors out, I've made a lot of friends who are willing to help me in return. Plus it makes my work environment enjoyable.
