What do you do?
I am a senior account executive in the New York office of Lippert/Heilshorn & Associates. I am a member of the agency's medical team, focusing on investor relations and corporate communications.

How did you get your job?
Ad+One, an advertising, media and public relations recruitment firm.

What J-School experiences helped launch your career?
Steve Kopcha's strategic writing classes helped to prepare me for conducting messaging and positioning exercises. Working with Archer Daniels Midland to develop B2B and consumer ad campaigns for my capstone project was a real-world lesson in agency-client relations. Cindy Monticue, BJ '91, helped to land my first public relations internship following an exit interview.

What advice do you have for current students?
Don't hesitate to take an internship after graduating, especially if it's in an area you really enjoy. Check out media coverage and news releases from a potential employer before going in for an interview. Employers often gauge a job candidate by their interest in the company; if you can't think of any questions for your employer, you may not enjoy the job. And never leave a job before you land a new one; employment is a powerful negotiating tool.

What is your favorite J-School memory?
My favorite memory is filming a television commercial with Emily Johnson, BJ '02, against the repeal of Columbia's deposit ordinance. The project was part of Jack Smith's broadcast advertising class. We also wrote a jingle for the spot, which we recorded at a studio on campus. Guitar Trader rented me a banjo for the session.
