What do you do?
I'm associate dean and chief communications officer for the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

How did you get your job?
A Missouri degree, 20 years as a journalist, an unexpected opportunity to be vice president at a movie studio, a sale and buyout and more connections and opportunities and relationships and really, really, really good timing.

What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School?
Understand the politics of the organizations you write about and the ones you work for. Both have enormous bearing on your own success. If you don't know what's happening and why, you can't make your way forward.

What advice do you have for current students?
Understand how to create compelling journalism in multiple kinds of media. The new media landscape is changing too quickly to expect to use any one kind of tool, or to create on only one kind of platform, throughout your career.

What is your favorite J-School memory?
Working all the time, then walking over to the Old Heidelberg with classmates and teachers to grab a pitcher of beer and nachos.
