Fernando Nunez, BJ '65

On his journalism education:
The single thing that bothered me most when I was at the J-School was being required to take journalism courses outside of my area of interest. Yet that well-rounded education helped my career.

On his international career:
In magazines, I became executive editor for the Vision Group, the largest Spanish news magazine organization. In electronic media I developed and presided over the second-largest radio network in the Republic of Panama. Eventually I became a political commentator on Channels 21 and 33 in that country. It wasn't until much later that I managed a daily newspaper, which had been my ambition since my time at the Missouri School of Journalism.

On the impact of his journalism training:
You may ask yourself: "What is the similarity between being the reluctant editor of Showme magazine at the J-School and directing a conglomerate of 10 news magazines in seven languages based in London?" The discipline is the same, the news-gathering techniques are the same, and the dedication to excellence has to be the same. (Showme was the student-run humor and literary magazine published by Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism fraternity that is now the Society of Professional Journalists.)

On the status of his career:
I am now partially retired from journalism while I serve as Panamanian Consul General in Tampa, Fla.
