Name: Jennifer Hall
Degree and Year: BJ '03 (Broadcast News)
Company: KCNC (Denver CBS affiliate)
Company Web Site: http://cbs4denver.com/
Title: 5 a.m. Weekday Producer
City and State: Denver, Colo.

What was your first job? How did you get that job?
My first job was as the weekend morning producer for KCNC - the CBS O&O in Denver. I got the job through a Missouri connection. Another producer here sent an email to Stacey Woelfel saying the station was in need of producers. So, I immediately got in contact with him, found out all the details and sent in my tapes. They wanted to interview me but said they would wait until I came home (I grew up in Denver). So, I made plans to fly home for a weekend...and while I was sitting at the airport waiting to fly back to Missouri, they called and offered me the job.

What advantages did a Missouri journalism degree give you?
I firmly believe that if I had not gone to Mizzou I would not have gotten the job. The broadcast program gave me experience that made it difficult for others to compete for the same job.

What is the most interesting thing you've done since graduation?
All I have done since graduation is work at KCNC. I've only taken one weekend off for a friend's wedding in Ohio.

What advice would you give to current journalism students?
Stick with the program and it will pay off in the end. Things may seem overwhelming now, but its all to train you for the real world and to turn you into the best journalist you can be.

What do you do with your free time?
In my free time, I take ballet classes with a teacher I had in high school, and I volunteer with Campus Crusade for Christ here in Denver.

What is the hardest part about your job?
The hours! I've been on overnights since I started in June and it will not likely be changing anytime soon. I also struggle with knowing what to do in some breaking news situations...I haven't had many and the procedures here are different than they were at KOMU.

What, if anything, do you miss about Columbia or MU?
I really miss the professors in the broadcast department. Some of them were really instrumental in helping me to grow and learn and become a better producer.

What is your current job? What do you love about it? What is not so great?
In February, I was promoted to the 5 a.m. weekday producer at KCNC. I absolutely love working in Denver and working with the people here at KCNC. They are really helpful in teaching me the ways of this station. The most frustrating part has been that when I was on the weekends I often had very little feedback and often felt unsure of what I was doing because I was all on my own on the weekends. But that has gotten better as I have gotten more comfortable with the system here and have gotten more feedback as time goes on.
