Degree and Year: MA '95 Company: Towson University Company Web Site: http://www.towson.edu/ Title: Journalism Professor City and State: Towson, Md. What do you do? I teach journalism at Towson University, which is part of the University of Maryland system. We are located just outside of Baltimore. How did you get your job? I was a TV news reporter for about a decade, but always with the goal to eventually move into teaching. I was lucky enough to make contacts in the teaching field. I started out as an adjunct and then was hired full time. What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School? The hands-on experience that the J-School provides is unmatched in any journalism program that I've seen. I was able to leave graduate school and find my first job at a great station, KCCI in Des Moines. What advice do you have for current students? Don't just focus on one platform (broadcast, print, photo), but try to gain as many skills as you can across all platforms. Open your minds to new media and what new technological advances are going to come your way as you embark on your careers. It's an exciting time! What is your favorite J-School memory? My father, Jim Atwater, was the former dean of the J-School and was a professor when I was there. I was lucky enough to take his magazine writing class when I was there. I think I may be a bit biased, but he's the best teacher I've ever had! My other favorite memory (and just as important) is meeting my husband, John Anglim, MA '95, there. Three kids and lots of TV news stories later, we still talk about how valuable our experience at Mizzou was. The J-School apologizes for any inconvenience. Please visit our "Contact Us" Web page. |
