Degree and Year: BJ '89 Company: QVC Company Web Site: http://www.qvc.com/ Title: Program Host City and State: West Chester, Pa.
I am currently a program host on QVC, the world's largest electronic retailer. Okay, it's a shopping channel! I've worked on air at QVC for almost 14 years. Prior to that, I worked for the CBS affiliate in Lafayette, Ind. How did you get your job? I simply sent a resume tape and then auditioned at an open call with about 500 other people. My on-air training in news, especially live shots, really helped my confidence for this job. Honestly, I use my reporting skills every day. I have to take a lot of information about every product, whittle it down so it's easy to understand and make sure I don't bury the lead when I'm selling. What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School? Integrity is everything. People believe what they hear and what they read, so you better make sure that what you're putting out there is the absolute truth. It's never hard to be accountable when you know you've done the right thing. What advice do you have for current students? Push yourself to have as many life experiences as possible. Travel, observe people in different settings, try things you don't like...these are the tools that will serve you well as you head out into the world of journalism to tell stories. What is your favorite J-School memory? I uncovered a scandal at the mid-Missouri prison for men in Moberly. You would have thought I was doing a piece for 60 Minutes with all the phone calls, video shoots and meetings with anonymous sources. It was my first taste of real investigative journalism, and every minute was a thrill. When that story finally broadcast, it was one of my proudest J-School moments.
