Katie Kelley, BJ '98

What do you do in your job?
I'm the content editor at CiN Weekly, which is a free weekly entertainment and lifestyle publication in Cincinnati, Ohio that is operated by the Cincinnati Enquirer. It was established in 2003 and is owned by Gannett.

What have you faced in your career path so far?
I had a job in Cincinnati when I finished school at Missouri. So I moved to the city and started employment with Gardner Publications less than a month after graduation. I worked on Modern Machine Shop and Production Machining magazines. After five years there, I moved to my current job.

What is your best professional lesson learned at the J-School?
Probably the most useful class I took was "Magazine Staff," which is the capstone for the magazine sequence. It was very much real world and a preview for exactly what I'm doing now. I'm much more prepared for what I do every day because of that class.

What is one story you remember working on while in the J-School?
The story I remember most was a section front profile piece for the Missourian that I wrote about the minister at the Campus Lutheran church who was retiring after decades of serving the Columbia/campus area.

What is your favorite J-School memory?
I loved the Magazine Club trips to New York City. I was one of the founders of those trips!

What is one thing you learned in your education at Mizzou that has helped you in areas outside of your career?
Since we had to take classes in so many areas, I am able to hold my own in a conversation about nearly anything.

What is something about you that may surprise people?
I lost my voice for three weeks after the Nebraska football game in 1997, when Nebraska scored a controversial "flea kicker" touchdown in overtime to win.

Do you have any advice for current J-School students?
Take time to research the place(s) you are applying to for jobs/internships. Personalize your cover letter and application, and make sure to follow all instructions if you are replying to an ad. Sell yourself and explain why you want to work for that specific company. If you do these things, you will surpass candidates from many other schools.
