Adam Wisneski, BJ '07, is one of three members of the Tulsa World staff who were honored Thursday with the Mental Health Association in Tulsa's 2009 Communication Award at the organization's annual awards ceremony. Wisneski along with Omer Gillham and Deon J. Hampton were recognized for their work on "Suicide: Hidden Epidemic," a three-day series that appeared Oct. 4-6 in the World and also featured online multimedia content. Katie Fretland, BJ '08, will join the Chicago News Cooperative, a new multi-platform news venture that will offer public service reporting about Chicago for The New York Times, the city's public television station and on the Internet. Brian Thompson, MA '09, adviser to Flagler College's student newspaper, The Gargoyle, has won the 2009 Ken Nordin Award in research from College Media Advisors, an organization of student media professionals. Thompson's winning paper, "Exploring 'Connectivity' at the College Newspaper: Can It Help Explain the Success of the Collegiate Press?," was the thesis for his master's degree in journalism. Nicole Norton, BJ '99, MA '01, has joined the BancorpSouth team as the Missouri regional sales and marketing coordinator. In addition to coordinating advertising, public relations and community events, she oversees the sales and service process for six BancorpSouth branches in Springfield and two locations in St. Louis. MSNBC.com has acquired EveryBlock, a Chicago-based Web site that offers news and information down to the neighborhood level in 15 cities, the two companies announced on Aug. 17. Until last month the startup, run by Washingtonpost.com veteran Adrian Holovaty, BJ '01, was supported by a two-year, $1.1 million grant from the Knight Foundation.  Added: Aug. 18, 2009

Scott Schaefer, BJ '04, and Sarah Hill, BJ '93, won a national Edward R. Morrow Award in the feature reporting category for "The Magic Tree," part of the "Sarah's Stories" series. The Radio-Television News Directors Association, the industry's leading trade organization, sponsors the competition. Elizabeth Holbrook, BJ '07, is the winner of the "Hostelworld.com Connects" video competition. Her video, "City Video Guide to San Francisco," was selected by Hostelworld.com users in an online poll where thousands of people voted for their favorite videos. As the grand-prize winner, Holbrook receives a round-the-world trip worth $5,000.  Added: July 15, 2009

Pamela Riemenschneider, BJ '02, a veteran writer, photographer and videographer for The Packer, on July 7 became the editor for Produce Merchandising magazine, a Vance Publishing Corp. sister publication. Abby Callard, BJ '09, has been selected for the prestigious internship at the Smithsonian magazine in Washington, D.C. She was one of approximately 150 applicants for the six-months-paid position. While in School, Callard won the Don Romero Writing Award and was a Discovery Fellow and a Walter Williams Scholar. Elise Hu, BJ '03, has worked as the state political reporter for KVUE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Austin, Texas, since fall 2006. Since starting in the post, she's been recognized by Texas AP broadcasters three years in a row for best beat reporting on Texas politics. She is also a political contributor to the Belo Texas cluster of TV stations, including WFAA-TV (Dallas), KHOU-TV (Houston) and KENS-TV (San Antonio). Hu joins five fellow Mizzou J-School alumni who are part of the Texas Capitol press corps.  Added: March 30, 2009

Jensen Moore, PhD '07, will join the West Virginia University faculty this summer and serve in two capacities. She is the new director of undergraduate online programs for the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism and will oversee curriculum development and promotion of the program. Moore also is a tenure-track assistant professor and will teach integrated marketing communication courses in the areas of advertising, new media, health communication, quantitative research methods and mass communication theory.  Added: March 26, 2009

Shahira Fahmy, PhD '03, joined the University of Arizona in August 2008 as an associate professor in the School of Journalism. She has a joint appointment in the Department of Near Eastern Studies. Fahmy spent five years working in the news and broadcast industries in Egypt and Italy before pursuing her doctoral studies at the Missouri School of Journalism in 2000. She has traveled to more than 20 countries and is fluent in four languages, skills that enabled her to conduct surveys with embedded reporters worldwide and to conduct surveys of audiences of Arabic satellite channels in more than 67 countries. Fahmy's research interests primarily focus on visual communication with an international perspective, as well as political communication and media performance during wartime. She has more than 75 refereed publications and convention papers. Her work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Mass Communication & Society, International Communication Gazette, Visual Communication Quarterly and Newspaper Research Journal. Fahmy is currently a manuscript reviewer for six scholarly journals and is on the editorial board of Mass Communication & Society, Visual Communication Quarterly, Media, War & Conflict and two international editions of the Global Media Journal.  Added: March 20, 2009

The Oklahoma Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists named Oklahoma State University assistant journalism professor Ray Murray, MA '05, the Teacher of the Year. Murray has been credited with helping revitalize the university’s long-dormant SPG chapter and serves as its co-adviser.  Added: March 13, 2009

Brian, MA '05, and Renee Martin-Kratzer, MA '99, PhD '05, are raising funds to find a cure for eosinophilic esophagitis, a rare disease that causes their daughters to have improper responses to food proteins. Zoe was diagnosed at 14 months; Kedzie at 5 years. Renee is an assistant professor in journalism at the University of Florida. Herman Chiu, PhD '04, died in Corvallis, Ore., on Oct. 18, 2008. A champion chess player, Chiu also was recognized for his scholarship. He received an award in 2005 for a paper submitted to American Journalism Historians Association competition titled, "Me Melican Man: How Four California Newspapers Vilified the Chinese Who Built the First Transcontinental Railroad,"  Added: Feb. 18, 2009

Scott Schaefer, BJ '04, earned first place wins in two categories submitted to the National Press Photographers Association Quarterly Clip Contest for region seven. Schaefer, a videographer for KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo., won in the feature and in-depth categories.  Added: Feb. 17, 2009

Two graduate students -- one former and one current -- won first and third place in the student category of the Society of Environmental Journalists national awards contest. Gavin Off, MA '08, won first place for "Lessons in Leniency," an article published May 6 in the Columbia Daily Tribune while he was still a student at the School. Off is now the computer-assisted reporting editor at the Tulsa (Okla.) World. His story recounted the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' history of reducing penalties filed against large animal farms for pollution violations. Katherine Harmon, a master's student, won third place for "Murky Waters," published Nov. 10, 2007, in the Columbia Missourian. The story detailed the evolving scientific understanding of Missouri River sediment and the impact that understanding is having on resource management, agriculture, public policy and people.  Added: Feb. 13, 2009

The professional analysis from the master's project by Alisa Booze Troetschel, MA '07, was the cover story in the January 2009 issue of News Photographer. Serving on her committee were associate professors Jackie Bell, chair, and David Rees as well as Byron Scott, professor emeritus. The magazine blurb reads: "The January 2009 issue of News Photographer magazine features a cover story by Alisa Booze Troetschel about shooting for non-profits and charities and NGOs as a career-building and portfolio-expanding exercise, as well as nurturing the photographer's soul while also building some new business."  Added: Feb. 13, 2009

Neil Kessler, BJ '00, is the head of business development at Colemont Insurance Brokers in Dallas. Colemont is one of the largest wholesale specialty insurance brokers in the United States. Scott Ward, BJ '04, is the assistant director of athletic media relations at the University of Northern Colorado. He previously served as sports-desk director for Sun Newspapers in Gladstone, Mo. The master's degree project of Jeronimo Nisa Luna, MA '08, will be broadcast on Kansas City's Public Broadcasting KCPT Channel 19 at 8 p.m. on January 29. "Keeping the Tradition Alive in Little Dixie: Fiddling in Missouri" is a blend of video and still photography and runs about 30 minutes. Jero is a staff photographer at the Decatur (Ala.) Justin Heckert, BJ '02, has a story included in The Best American Crime Reporting 2008, published by HarperCollins. The piece, "I'm with the Steelers," about a Pittsburgh con who impersonated several Steelers players, ran in ESPN The Magazine in May 2007.  Added: Dec. 9, 2008

Katherine Johanns, BJ '02 (magazine journalism), received a 2008 Rising Star Scholarship from the Angerosa Research Foundation in Alexandria, Va. Through the Rising Star program, the foundation awards professional development scholarships to emerging leaders working in association communications. The American Journalism Historians Association recently recognized Brenda Edgerton-Webster, MA '00, PhD '07, as a finalist for the 2008 Margaret A. Blanchard Doctoral Dissertation Prize. She received a cash award and a plaque in recognition of this honor. The title of her dissertation was "The Tale of Two Voices: An Oral History of Women Communicators from Mississippi Freedom Summer 1964 and a New Black Feminist Concept." Earnest L. Perry, chair of journalism studies, served as her adviser. AJHA's dissertation prize was established in 1997 and named for the late Margaret A. Blanchard in 2003. Blanchard was a First Amendment scholar and professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was especially known for her guidance of doctoral students of journalism history.  Added: Nov. 24, 2008

Samantha Friedman, MA '07, is one of 25 central Arkansas women selected for the inaugural class of Emerging Leaders, a Women's Foundation of Arkansas program designed to inspire, educate and empower the group to affect social change. Allison Ross, BJ '08, earned second place in the Chandler Award national competition for three articles she wrote as a student during the 2007-2008 academic year. She received $300 and a plaque on Sept. 20 at the Religion Newswriters Association conference in Washington, D.C. The Chandler Award recognizes excellence in writing with emphasis on reporting skill and grasp of religion issues that is fair, balanced and in accordance with journalistic standards. It is named for Russell Chandler, an award-winning former religion writer for the Los Angeles Times.  Added: Sept. 30, 2008

Four Missouri Journalism graduates have been included in the book The Best American Sports Writing 2008, edited by William Nack, veteran sportswriter and author of the classic Secretariat. A piece by Wright Thompson, BJ '01, "Behind the Bamboo Curtain," examines pre-Olympics China and is included in its entirety in the book. John Sahly, BJ '07, was named to the book's notable list for his piece on softball published in the Aurora (Ohio) Beacon Journal. He currently covers Northern Illinois University sports for the DeKalb (Ill.) Daily Chronicle. Additionally, ESPN The Magazine writer Seth Wickersham, BJ '00, and Kansas City (Mo.) Jean Chung, MA '03, won the inaugural Pierre and Alexandra Boulat Association grant for her photography project, "Tears in Congo." Annie Boulat, the mother of the late photojournalist Alexandra Boulat and the widow of Life magazine photographer Pierre Boulat, announced the grant this week from Paris. The winning Boulat grant proposal from Chung was for the continuation of her Congo project, which is already in progress. She has documented the aftermath of sexual violence committed by Congolese and Rwandan rebels and some of the hundreds of thousands of women who have been victims of the violence during the interethnic conflict. Chung is a freelance photojournalist who shoots for World Picture Network in New York and Onasia in Bangkok. Previously she received the CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage in 2007 for "Maternal Mortality in Afghanistan," and her work has been widely published in major newspapers and magazines.  Updated: Sept. 19, 2008

The company owns and operates the premier public relations and publicity firm, The Publicity Agency, based in Tampa, Fla. Brooke Williams, BJ '01, is an investigative reporter on a computer-assisted reporting team at The San Diego Union-Tribune. In 2005, she was a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists for an investigation of the city's land holdings. Williams previously worked as a writer for the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C., where she wrote a chapter in The Buying of the President, a best-selling book. She also was a writer for Windfalls of War, an investigation of federal contracts for work in Iraq and Afghanistan, which won a George Polk Award.  Added: June 11, 2008

Keith Ecker, BJ '04, recently left his position at B2B magazine to pursue a career in comedy. For the past two years, Ecker has been an actor, writer, improviser and stand-up comedian. He said, "My life outside of work quickly began to eclipse my day job. Now I'm taking the plunge but relying on my education as a crutch to help subsidize my living. I will be in search of various freelance clients, many of which will likely be in the legal sector which is where my real-world experience lies."  Added: June 3, 2008

The work of Bea Wallace, MA '08, will be featured in a new book, 25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers, published by Powerhouse Books and Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies. The book explores the theme of transitions, and some of Wallace's photographs were drawn from her work at the Missouri School of Journalism. She worked full time as an assistant picture editor at TIME magazine in New York while completing her graduate degree. Libby Murphy, BJ '06, is following in the footsteps of Laura Chia, BJ '05, and Tammy Cloutier, BJ '99, by spending a year driving a 27-foot-long hot dog around the central United States. As Oscar Mayer "hotdoggers," Murphy and her partner, Lindsay Webster, a 2006 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, navigate the famous Wienermobile throughout the Midwest, promoting the company and its products. The best part of the job, Murphy said, is that when the Wienermobile rolls into town, "everyone is happy to see us." In June, Murphy will finish her year with Oscar Mayer and begin working as an assistant state director with the Miss Universe pageant. Citing the station's community service in the face of "personal danger and ultimately great personal loss," the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism recently honored WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Miss., with a 2007 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia-University Award for broadcast journalism. Even after Hurricane Katrina tore a hole in the newsroom's ceiling, WLOX continued to report for more than 12 days, collaborating with radio stations, local newspapers and its sister stations to keep the residents of South Mississippi informed about the disaster. In addition to the duPont award, WLOX has earned a George Foster Peabody Award and a National Edward R. Murrow Award for its Katrina coverage. Seth Wickersham, BJ '00, is a senior writer at ESPN The Magazine, where he's worked since graduating. Wickersham primarily covers the NFL; his assignments have also taken him to the Athens Olympics, the World Series, the NCAA tournament and the NHL and NBA playoffs. At The Magazine, he has profiled dozens of NFL players, from Leonard Little to Peyton Manning to Albert Haynesworth, and has also written about gay rugby, prep hoops star Greg Oden, and the depressed post-NFL life of Broderick Thomas. Wickersham also contributes to ESPN.com and ESPNEWS. His work has been cited in the Best American Sportswriting anthology. Teresa Heinz Housel, MA '00, is an assistant professor of communication at Hope College in Michigan. She teaches the print journalism classes in the department as well as cultural theory and general communication courses. After leaving the MU campus in January 1996, she spent eight months in England researching for her journalism master's thesis on British journalism. Following several years in Australia on a post-graduate fellowship in cultural studies, Housel received her PhD in Communication and Culture from Indiana University in 2005. Timothy Dyer, BJ '03, is employed at GMR Marketing in Milwaukee, Wis., as an associate creative director. He works on various accounts for GMR, helping to generate ideas for a wide range of marketing programs across multiple media platforms. He said he enjoys his position, and he offered some advice for those looking at a career in creative services: "My best advice for a student who wants to be tomorrow's 'creative' is to get plugged in via networking. Linkedin (a Web-based networking tool) happens to be my favorite online method for networking. It is also important to become a pop culture follower. In today's world, ideas are being driven by technology and innovation. Literally, you can do whatever you can think of - prom partnerships, sponsorships, music, sports, charity, mobile, gaming, wireless - whatever it is, brands are jumping on-board to do it today, so you've got to be ahead of them." Marina Walker Guevara, MA '05, has won the 2006 Reuters-IUCN (World Conservation Union) Media Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting for her work examining the dire consequences of lead poisoning on children in a small Peruvian community. The award-winning story, "The Children of Lead," has its roots in her journalism master's project. Walker Guevara was presented with the $5,000 prize at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. Kristy Siegfried, MA '04, is a reporter for the United Nations' Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN). Based in South Africa, she is an HIV/AIDS journalist for its PlusNews service. She writes: "AIDS reporting can be tough, but it's not all doom and gloom. There are a lot of great projects and initiatives going on that I also try to cover. I visited four hospitals this past week in Malawi, and there is still so much work to be done in terms of trying to get treatment to everyone who needs it. It's hard to accept that someone should be denied the possibility of life because they happen to live in an area where treatment isn't yet available and that so many mothers still pass the virus to their babies because they can't get their hands on the one dose of anti-retrovirals needed to reduce the chances of transmission."  Added: Nov. 16, 2006

Mark Geary, BJ '02, MA '04, won an EMMY in the interactivity category for a story about an Iowa couple living out the country, but running a million-dollar eBay DVD business. Mark worked with Web producers to develop a television news story featuring both on-air and online components. The combination of the news package and the special Web site earned him the EMMY award. Mark says, "I could never have won an award like this without the support and guidance I received at Mizzou. Now that I've worked in the 'real world' for a few years, I understand more than ever the value of my education at KOMU/MU. The University of Missouri has prepared me well!"  Added: Oct. 31, 2006

An exhibit by photojournalist Melina Mara, BJ '00, was displayed at the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Titled "Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate," the exhibit focused on the nation's most powerful women and the shifting leadership in Congress.

Melissa Miller, BJ '00, is the director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau in Santa Claus, Ind., effective April 17. She will coordinate marketing and public relations efforts to promote Spencer County as an overnight destination.

Bill Reiter, BJ '00, and Laurie Mansfield, MA '00, were married in Irish Settlement, Iowa, on Oct. 8, 2005. The couple lives in Des Moines.

Marco Mulcahy, MA '01, is now a supervising editor for The Associated Press, working out of the AP's headquarters in New York City. His job is to oversee the operations for the international news wire service at night, determining the top stories and monitoring the content, among other duties. After concentrating in international journalism at Missouri, he traveled for four years, teaching at universities and advising media outlets in Brazil, Romania, Bulgaria, Mozambique and Moldova. Mulcahy has worked in more than 30 countries on every continent but Antarctica. He is married and living in Brooklyn with his wife Andreea.

Jenny Sharp, BJ '01, was promoted to senior account executive at AbelsonTaylor in Chicago, the largest independent medical advertising agency in the world.

Ann Molinaro, BJ '02, sends this update: "I'm finishing up my last year of law school at the University of Maryland. Then, after I graduate in May, I'll join my (by-then) husband in New York. Joe is completing his residency in Manhattan at the NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Anne Kuhl, BJ '01, MA '02, is public relations manager with Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation in St. Louis.

Brian Blank, BJ '03, is an associate producer with CNN in New York. Blank says, "Everything I know about journalism I learned at Mizzou. I got my job at CNN through the Mizzou Mafia, and I work with some proud Tigers here." Blank says the Missouri School of Journalism definitely has the greatest broadcast journalism program in the English-speaking world.

Sadie Gurman, BJ '06, won two first place awards in the recent Kansas City Press Club's Heart of America awards. "Is It Money Well Spent?", published in the Joplin (Mo.) Globe, won in the investigative reporting category. "Single Mom, Rookie Cop," published in the Boone County (Mo.) Journal, won the profile category. Gurman, a newspaper journalism major, is now working as a reporter for the Rockford Register Star, an 80,000-circulation daily in Rockford, Ill.

Lindsey Jamis, BJ '06 (Advertising), landed a job as a copywriter at VML in Kansas City. "I've been there since June 2006 and am loving it."
