She has traveled to more than 20 countries and is fluent in four languages, skills that enabled her to conduct surveys with embedded reporters worldwide and to conduct surveys of audiences of Arabic satellite channels in more than 67 countries. Fahmy's research interests primarily focus on visual communication with an international perspective, as well as political communication and media performance during wartime. Katherine Harmon, a master's student, won third place for "Murky Waters," published Nov. 10, 2007, in the Columbia Missourian. The story detailed the evolving scientific understanding of Missouri River sediment and the impact that understanding is having on resource management, agriculture, public policy and people. Annie Boulat, the mother of the late photojournalist Alexandra Boulat and the widow of Life magazine photographer Pierre Boulat, announced the grant this week from Paris. The winning Boulat grant proposal from Chung was for the continuation of her Congo project, which is already in progress. She has documented the aftermath of sexual violence committed by Congolese and Rwandan rebels and some of the hundreds of thousands of women who have been victims of the violence during the interethnic conflict. Chung is a freelance photojournalist who shoots for World Picture Network in New York and Onasia in Bangkok. Previously she received the CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage in 2007 for "Maternal Mortality in Afghanistan," and her work has been widely published in major newspapers and magazines. Kristy Siegfried, MA '04, is a reporter for the United Nations' Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN). Based in South Africa, she is an HIV/AIDS journalist for its PlusNews service. She writes: "AIDS reporting can be tough, but it's not all doom and gloom. There are a lot of great projects and initiatives going on that I also try to cover. I visited four hospitals this past week in Malawi, and there is still so much work to be done in terms of trying to get treatment to everyone who needs it. It's hard to accept that someone should be denied the possibility of life because they happen to live in an area where treatment isn't yet available and that so many mothers still pass the virus to their babies because they can't get their hands on the one dose of anti-retrovirals needed to reduce the chances of transmission." Mark Geary, BJ '02, MA '04, won an EMMY in the interactivity category for a story about an Iowa couple living out the country, but running a million-dollar eBay DVD business. Mark worked with Web producers to develop a television news story featuring both on-air and online components. The combination of the news package and the special Web site earned him the EMMY award. Mark says, "I could never have won an award like this without the support and guidance I received at Mizzou. Now that I've worked in the 'real world' for a few years, I understand more than ever the value of my education at KOMU/MU. The University of Missouri has prepared me well!" Added: Oct. 31, 2006
An exhibit by photojournalist Melina Mara, BJ '00, was displayed at the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Titled "Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate," the exhibit focused on the nation's most powerful women and the shifting leadership in Congress. Melissa Miller, BJ '00, is the director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau in Santa Claus, Ind., effective April 17. She will coordinate marketing and public relations efforts to promote Spencer County as an overnight destination. Bill Reiter, BJ '00, and Laurie Mansfield, MA '00, were married in Irish Settlement, Iowa, on Oct. 8, 2005. The couple lives in Des Moines.
Jenny Sharp, BJ '01, was promoted to senior account executive at AbelsonTaylor in Chicago, the largest independent medical advertising agency in the world. Ann Molinaro, BJ '02, sends this update: "I'm finishing up my last year of law school at the University of Maryland. Then, after I graduate in May, I'll join my (by-then) husband in New York. Joe is completing his residency in Manhattan at the NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases. Anne Kuhl, BJ '01, MA '02, is public relations manager with Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation in St. Louis. Brian Blank, BJ '03, is an associate producer with CNN in New York. Blank says, "Everything I know about journalism I learned at Mizzou. I got my job at CNN through the Mizzou Mafia, and I work with some proud Tigers here." Blank says the Missouri School of Journalism definitely has the greatest broadcast journalism program in the English-speaking world. Rachel Otto, BJ '03, is a media relations specialist at Saint Louis University's Medical Center in Missouri. Lauren Peters, BJ '03, lives in Richmond, Va. She is freelancing as an art director. Miun Seo, BJ '03, lives in the Kansas City metro area and works in public affairs/media relations for a national regulatory organization. She also is attending graduate school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City MA Program in English Language and Literature. The bimonthly publication reaches 125,000 readers with travel and lifestyle information about the state's various regions. Rachel Dennis, BJ '06, is an associate media planner for Kelly, Scott and Madison in Chicago. Breck Fleming Gamel, BJ '02, MA '06 (Education), lives in Durham, N.C. Sadie Gurman, BJ '06, won two first place awards in the recent Kansas City Press Club's Heart of America awards. "Is It Money Well Spent?", published in the Joplin (Mo.) Globe, won in the investigative reporting category. "Single Mom, Rookie Cop," published in the Boone County (Mo.) Journal, won the profile category. Gurman, a newspaper journalism major, is now working as a reporter for the Rockford Register Star, an 80,000-circulation daily in Rockford, Ill. Lindsey Jamis, BJ '06 (Advertising), landed a job as a copywriter at VML in Kansas City. "I've been there since June 2006 and am loving it."
