Heather Cottle, BJ '07, won the Vormelker-Thomas Student Award sponsored by the Special Libraries Association. The award provides a $1,500 stipend to assist graduate students attending their first Special Libraries Association Annual conference, which will be June 15-18 in Seattle. Cottle is currently a graduate student at MU's School of Information Science and Learning Technologies, and she works as a graduate assistant in the Frank Lee Martin Memorial Library at the Missouri School of Journalism.  Added: May 12, 2008

Mark Greenblatt, BJ '00, a reporter for KHOU-TV in Houston, is a finalist for the 2007 Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. The Livingstons, the nation's largest all-media, general reporting prizes, award three $10,000 prizes for Local, National, and International Reporting to journalists under the age of 35. The winners will be announced on June 4, 2008. Traci Angel, MA '07, is the Missouri School of Journalism's recipient of the 2008 Merck Science Journalism Award in recognition of her outstanding work in science and health writing. In addition to receiving a $1,000 monetary award and plaque, Angel participated in a four-day conference at Rutgers University along with 11 other student winners from journalism schools throughout the United States and Canada. Angel served as a Knight Editing Fellow at the School for the 2005-2006 academic year, working as the co-editor of the general assignment beat at the Columbia Missourian.  Added: April 28, 2008

Sarah Wachtel, BJ '03, BA '03, is a healthcare lobbyist for Premier Advocacy in Washington, D.C., where she covers Medicaid, the State Children's Health Insurance Program and the uninsured. Prior to joining Premier, Wachtel worked for The Brookings Institution and on Capitol Hill as deputy press secretary for Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and as press secretary for Rep. Karen McCarthy of Missouri. Brooke Williams, BJ '01, is an investigative reporter on a computer-assisted reporting team at The San Diego Union-Tribune. In 2005, she was a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists for an investigation of the city's land holdings. Williams previously worked as a writer for the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C., where she wrote a chapter in The Buying of the President, a best-selling book. A former assistant sports editor and sports editor at the Columbia Missourian, Grubaugh attended MU from 1989-1991 and finally finished his master's project nine years later (he said he doesn't recommend this approach). Ben Poston, MA '07, authored the lead story in the Nov. 25 St. Louis Post-Dispatch that details the re-opening of a murder case in southeast Missouri and the possible wrongful conviction that ensued. The story began last year as a project in Professor Steve Weinberg's intermediate writing class. After interning at the Post-Dispatch in 2006, Poston continued to work on the story for the paper. Marina Walker Guevara, MA '05, won a 2007 Inter American Press Association Excellence in Journalism award for in-depth reporting for her investigative story "What Happens When an American Company Offshores Pollution?" She co-authored the piece, published in Mother Jones magazine, with freelance journalist Sara Shipley Hiles. The article was a follow-up to Walker Guevara's master's project report that was published in the St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch. It describes the environmental problems caused by a United States-based lead company running simultaneous operations in the state of Missouri and in La Oroya, Peru. Libby Murphy, BJ '06, is following in the footsteps of Laura Chia, BJ '05, and Tammy Cloutier, BJ '99, by spending a year driving a 27-foot-long hot dog around the central United States. As Oscar Mayer "hotdoggers," Murphy and her partner, Lindsay Webster, a 2006 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, navigate the famous Wienermobile throughout the Midwest, promoting the company and its products. The best part of the job, Murphy said, is that when the Wienermobile rolls into town, "everyone is happy to see us." In June, Murphy will finish her year with Oscar Mayer and begin working as an assistant state director with the Miss Universe pageant. Citing the station's community service in the face of "personal danger and ultimately great personal loss," the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism recently honored WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Miss., with a 2007 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia-University Award for broadcast journalism. Even after Hurricane Katrina tore a hole in the newsroom's ceiling, WLOX continued to report for more than 12 days, collaborating with radio stations, local newspapers and its sister stations to keep the residents of South Mississippi informed about the disaster. In addition to the duPont award, WLOX has earned a George Foster Peabody Award and a National Edward R. Murrow Award for its Katrina coverage. In covering the city court system for the past two-plus years, she has written about everything from the inner workings of a drug gang that used children as dealers to a foul smell permeating the hallways of the courthouse. Seth Wickersham, BJ '00, is a senior writer at ESPN The Magazine, where he's worked since graduating. Wickersham primarily covers the NFL; his assignments have also taken him to the Athens Olympics, the World Series, the NCAA tournament and the NHL and NBA playoffs. At The Magazine, he has profiled dozens of NFL players, from Leonard Little to Peyton Manning to Albert Haynesworth, and has also written about gay rugby, prep hoops star Greg Oden, and the depressed post-NFL life of Broderick Thomas. Wickersham also contributes to ESPN.com and ESPNEWS. His work has been cited in the Best American Sportswriting anthology. Teresa Heinz Housel, MA '00, is an assistant professor of communication at Hope College in Michigan. She teaches the print journalism classes in the department as well as cultural theory and general communication courses. After leaving the MU campus in January 1996, she spent eight months in England researching for her journalism master's thesis on British journalism. Following several years in Australia on a post-graduate fellowship in cultural studies, Housel received her PhD in Communication and Culture from Indiana University in 2005. Timothy Dyer, BJ '03, is employed at GMR Marketing in Milwaukee, Wis., as an associate creative director. He works on various accounts for GMR, helping to generate ideas for a wide range of marketing programs across multiple media platforms. He said he enjoys his position, and he offered some advice for those looking at a career in creative services: "My best advice for a student who wants to be tomorrow's 'creative' is to get plugged in via networking. Linkedin (a Web-based networking tool) happens to be my favorite online method for networking. It is also important to become a pop culture follower. In today's world, ideas are being driven by technology and innovation. Literally, you can do whatever you can think of - prom partnerships, sponsorships, music, sports, charity, mobile, gaming, wireless - whatever it is, brands are jumping on-board to do it today, so you've got to be ahead of them." Marina Walker Guevara, MA '05, has won the 2006 Reuters-IUCN (World Conservation Union) Media Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting for her work examining the dire consequences of lead poisoning on children in a small Peruvian community. The award-winning story, "The Children of Lead," has its roots in her journalism master's project. Walker Guevara was presented with the $5,000 prize at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. Kristy Siegfried, MA '04, is a reporter for the United Nations' Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN). Based in South Africa, she is an HIV/AIDS journalist for its PlusNews service. She writes: "AIDS reporting can be tough, but it's not all doom and gloom. There are a lot of great projects and initiatives going on that I also try to cover. I visited four hospitals this past week in Malawi, and there is still so much work to be done in terms of trying to get treatment to everyone who needs it. It's hard to accept that someone should be denied the possibility of life because they happen to live in an area where treatment isn't yet available and that so many mothers still pass the virus to their babies because they can't get their hands on the one dose of anti-retrovirals needed to reduce the chances of transmission."  Added: Nov. 16, 2006

Mark Geary, BJ '02, MA '04, won an EMMY in the interactivity category for a story about an Iowa couple living out the country, but running a million-dollar eBay DVD business. Mark worked with Web producers to develop a television news story featuring both on-air and online components. The combination of the news package and the special Web site earned him the EMMY award. Mark says, "I could never have won an award like this without the support and guidance I received at Mizzou. Now that I've worked in the 'real world' for a few years, I understand more than ever the value of my education at KOMU/MU. The University of Missouri has prepared me well!"  Added: Oct. 31, 2006

An exhibit by photojournalist Melina Mara, BJ '00, was displayed at the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Titled "Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate," the exhibit focused on the nation's most powerful women and the shifting leadership in Congress.

Melissa Miller, BJ '00, is the director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau in Santa Claus, Ind., effective April 17. She will coordinate marketing and public relations efforts to promote Spencer County as an overnight destination.

Bill Reiter, BJ '00, and Laurie Mansfield, MA '00, were married in Irish Settlement, Iowa, on Oct. 8, 2005. The couple lives in Des Moines.

Marco Mulcahy, MA '01, is now a supervising editor for The Associated Press, working out of the AP's headquarters in New York City. His job is to oversee the operations for the international news wire service at night, determining the top stories and monitoring the content, among other duties. After concentrating in international journalism at Missouri, he traveled for four years, teaching at universities and advising media outlets in Brazil, Romania, Bulgaria, Mozambique and Moldova. Mulcahy has worked in more than 30 countries on every continent but Antarctica. He is married and living in Brooklyn with his wife Andreea.

Jenny Sharp, BJ '01, was promoted to senior account executive at AbelsonTaylor in Chicago, the largest independent medical advertising agency in the world.

Ann Molinaro, BJ '02, sends this update: "I'm finishing up my last year of law school at the University of Maryland. Then, after I graduate in May, I'll join my (by-then) husband in New York. Joe is completing his residency in Manhattan at the NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Anne Kuhl, BJ '01, MA '02, is public relations manager with Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation in St. Louis.

Brian Blank, BJ '03, is an associate producer with CNN in New York. Blank says, "Everything I know about journalism I learned at Mizzou. I got my job at CNN through the Mizzou Mafia, and I work with some proud Tigers here." Blank says the Missouri School of Journalism definitely has the greatest broadcast journalism program in the English-speaking world.

Sadie Gurman, BJ '06, won two first place awards in the recent Kansas City Press Club's Heart of America awards. "Is It Money Well Spent?", published in the Joplin (Mo.) Globe, won in the investigative reporting category. "Single Mom, Rookie Cop," published in the Boone County (Mo.) Journal, won the profile category. Gurman, a newspaper journalism major, is now working as a reporter for the Rockford Register Star, an 80,000-circulation daily in Rockford, Ill.

Lindsey Jamis, BJ '06 (Advertising), landed a job as a copywriter at VML in Kansas City. "I've been there since June 2006 and am loving it."
