Degree and Year: BJ '01 (Advertising) Company: McKinsey & Company Company Web Site: http://www.mckinsey.com/ Title: Management Consultant
I work as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in Atlanta, Ga. How did you get your job? I got this job through networking. McKinsey & Company gets a lot of applications, so having an insider vouch for you helps significantly. What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School? To be 100 percent confident in writing, speaking and communicating has been a professional edge that I leverage throughout my career. Specifically, the advertising curriculum has helped me think strategically and then communicate these thoughts succinctly. What advice do you have for current students? Pursue any and all career interests, whatever the industry or function. The J-School education and network has value everywhere. I entered the Navy after graduation and specialized in nuclear engineering and submarines. Now I work in the corporate world as a management consultant. In both of these non-journalism roles, I succeed because of, not in spite of, the J-School. What is your favorite J-School memory? Being Steve Kopcha's teaching assistant sits firmly among my favorite memories.
