Name: Randall Mitchell
Degree and Year: BJ '47
Title: Advertising and Public Relations Agency Owner (Retired)
City and State: Oceanside, Calif.

Randall Mitchell Randall Mitchell, BJ '47, left, as president of Alpha Delta Sigma in 1947.

Describe your career.
While in school, I was president of Alpha Delta Sigma, the advertising fraternity. I received several undergraduate honors, one of which included a trip to St Louis. After graduating, I went to Chicago to work for a small, one-man-type advertising agency. However, I was called back into the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

How long did you serve in the military?
I remained on active duty for a total of 21 years, which included time during World War II with the 1st Marine Division and occupation duty in China. I hold a Purple Heart from wounds I received at the Battle of Peleliu in the Pacific. I retired as a major in the Marine Corps in 1963 in Oceanside, Calif., at Camp Pendleton.

How have you served in the advertising business since then?
I opened my own advertising and public relations agency after my military retirement. In 1986, I finally retired and for all practical purposes closed the agency. A few years later, I did some public relations work for the 200th anniversary of Old Mission San Luis Rey. It was my last paying client. I still do lot of pro bono public relations and advertising work. I am an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America, and I chaired the San Diego Chapter in the 1970s. As a member of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association, I worked with national and international press and television stations at the U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters and Camp Pendleton. I chaired the Oceanside Museum of Art during eight formative years and its formal opening; I am still on the board. I also helped form the MiraCosta Community College Foundation and was an officer for several years. Additionally, I helped form the Tri-City Hospital Foundation, served as president for two years and still serve on the board.

What do you do in your spare time?
I serve as a church elder, and I spend time with my wife, Carol, a 1951 graduate of Vassar. We have four children and 11 grandchildren.
