Degree and Year: MA '79, PhD '80 Company: Howard University Title: Professor City and State: Washington, D.C. Describe your job and what makes it interesting? Currently, I am teaching research and research methods in journalism at Howard University. For thirty years, I owned Communications Research Incorporation, a full service research firm in Chicago. My company performed research for major companies like Exxon Mobile, DuPoint, American Cyanamid, and Shell. What are you working on currently? I've set up a consumer research center at Howard University to study minority approaches to advertising and marketing. What would be your best advice to current students? Be aware that there are conflicting and conflicted ways of thinking. What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement? We beat out major companies establishing quick stop food centers in Exxon Mobile convenience stores. We were pioneers in establishing this feature in convenience stores. What is your favorite J-School memory? The training I received under Dr. Stevenson set the course for my life. He taught me how to approach the world of advertising. The methodology strategies I learned under his guidance were very instrumental and provided a very good base for me. What's one thing about you that might surprise people? I still have my black, 1964 BMW motorcycle I used to ride while I was at Mizzou. What did you want to do as a kid? I wanted to write the Great American novel. What is your secret to success? Continuing my education has played a big part in my success. What makes you good at your job? The extensive training and special attention I received toward subjective approaches at MU has served me well throughout my career. I bring strong academic background and real world experience to my job.
