Degree and Year: BJ '00 Company: Wisconsin Education Association Council Company Web Site: http://www.weac.org/ Title: Assistant Editor City and State: Madison, Wis. What do you do? I maintain three Web sites for the organization (a teacher's union affiliated with the National Education Association). I also write and edit articles for a monthly print publication, and assist in the production of PR videos. I also often end up voicing radio commercials. How did you get your job? I originally started out working for Internet Broadcasting Systems, a company that contracts with TV affiliates in various cities to provide Web sites and staff to maintain them. I was laid off and the general manager at the affiliate I worked in had a friend of a friend who needed someone who knew something about the Internet. Best professional lesson learned at the J-School? Stay on top of emerging technology. What would be your best advice to current students? The job market is very tough right now. You may have to take a job that isn't in television news, but make the best of it. You can learn valuable lessons from any job. What is something about you that might surprise people? I'm training for a marathon - surprising since I was pretty lazy in college. What is one thing you wish you had done? As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a journalist. But, I wish that I had paid a bit more attention in some of my other classes. I also wish I had studied abroad in college.
