Degree and Year: BJ '02 (News-Editorial) Company: Southeast Missouri State University (Sports Information) Company Web Site: http://www.GoSoutheast.com/ Title: Assistant Sports Information Director City and State: Cape Girardeau, Mo. What do you do? What are your responsibilities? I work in the Sports Information Department of the Southeast Missouri State Athletic Department. The list of my duties could take up several pages. Some of the things I do are:
I was preparing to go back to school at Southeast, so since I needed a job to pay for school, I just called up and asked if they had an opening. When I worked at the Missourian and at the MU Student News, I always had an interest in working in the Sports Info business. What is the best professional lesson learned at the J-School? Working at the Missourian was the best professional lesson I've ever had. It showed me what the real world of journalism was like (even though I had assistance when I needed it). I was thrown into the "real world" right away, and I either had to sink or swim - or at least float. That's what I did. I floated for a while, and eventually I learned how to do things. It toughened me up, and after working there, I felt like I could work anywhere. What would be your best advice to current students? I would suggest that they work hardest in the classes for their major. If you're a journalism student, then work hardest in those classes. Don't use as much of your energy and time on other classes that you won't be using in your career. Pay attention to what you learn in your Major classes, because that's what you will need and fall back on when you get into the real world. What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement? I am currently the assistant sports information director. Although the title says that I am the assistant, I do the majority of the work. I consider the things I get accomplished here as my greatest professional achievement, because, much like at the Missourian, I was somewhat thrown into the fire with little direction as to what I need to do for my job. So, just the fact that I'm getting my work accomplished is an achievement. And to do it well, is an even larger achievement. I know that if I don't show up to the office, nothing gets done. It can be a good feeling to know that you are important at your workplace. However, it's very stressful, and I don't plan on staying in this field much longer. What did you want to be as a kid? I wanted to be a professional baseball player. I still would like to do this.
