Jobs

There are many decisions you have to make about your first job such as where you want to live, the career path you want to take and other personal considerations. The Missouri School of Journalism offers networking through professional programs, affiliations, faculty and alumni to ensure that graduates find jobs that match their career goals. The Journalism Career Center sends a weekly e-mail update to students about internships, career fairs and recruiter visits that help students network in their field. The Career Center also offers tips on landing your first job, including:

  • using various job search resources (commercial and University-wide);
  • understanding position descriptions and requirements;
  • preparing to apply (resumes, cover letters);
  • completing the interview process.

Contact Phou Sengsavanh, assistant director of career services, to find out more about job networking services.

Internships

Many recruiters and media organizations expect prospective employees to have at least one internship on their resume when they graduate. Internships give students the chance to work as professionals in the field, often helping them choose among various career paths. The hands-on experience that Missouri Journalism students receive at the Columbia Missourian, KOMU, KBIA, Vox or Mojo Ad gives them an edge when applying for highly competitive internships. The Journalism Career Center helps students find and apply for such internships through the following services:

  • sending a weekly e-mail update to students announcing internships and deadlines;
  • planning career fairs and recruiter visits for networking opportunities;
  • offering resume, cover letter and interview preparation services.

Contact Phou Sengsavanh, assistant director of career services, to find out more about internship possibilities. The Associated Press, CNN, USAToday, Fleishman Hillard public relations, Fairchild Publications and Moosylvania Marketing are just a few of the hundreds of companies where our students have interned. The Missouri Journalism Student Internships page provides a recent list of companies that have chosen to hire Missouri grads.

Career Fairs
