All documents (application forms, transcripts, resume, recommendations and GRE scores) must be received by the Graduate Studies Center, School of Journalism, before the deadline. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered by the Graduate Admissions Committee. Deadlines for application are:

On-Campus Programs
  • Fall Semester: January 1
  • Spring Semester: September 1
Online Programs
  • Summer Semester: April 15
  • Fall Semester: July 1
  • Spring Semester: November 15

Essays

  1. In a typed essay (250 words maximum), tell us about yourself, particularly your non-school experiences such as work, volunteer efforts, travel and professional endeavors.

  2. In a second typed essay (250 words maximum) explain:
    1. your interest in a graduate journalism degree;
    2. why you think Missouri's program best suits your needs; and
    3. your professional goals.

  3. Advanced study and practice within the fields of Journalism and Advertising rely on the skills involved in gathering and interpreting information as well as the ability to identify important issues and ask good questions. Please:
    1. select one of the general topics provided;
    2. formulate a question from that topic;
    3. explain how you would research the question you pose or you may answer it;
    4. frame your question/response within the context of the aspect of journalism you're intending to study; and
    5. limit your question and response to 500 words.

      • Journalism and the public good
      • Journalism in a democratic society
      • Cultural issues and diversity
      • Technology and ethics
      • Responsibility and freedom of speech
      • Use of traditional versus non-traditional media to deliver campaign messages
      • Convergence of advertising and public relations in executing strategic communication campaigns
      • Culturally based campaign message effects

Instructions:

  1. SAVE this completed form to your computer.

  2. UPLOAD the following items into the University of Missouri Graduate School application known as ApplyYourself; letters of recommendation should be uploaded by those who are writing your letters.
    1. your completed, saved Journalism application;
    2. your answers to the three essay questions;
    3. your resume.

  3. MAIL the following items to the address below:
    1. Two sets of official transcripts from all universities/colleges you have attended.
    2. Official exam scores.
    3. Copy of "Green Card" if a Permanent Resident Alien.
