Certificates in Journalism for Law Students
The School of Journalism's certificate program in journalism permits law students to learn journalism skills and receive a credential that is designed to help further their professional career objectives.
Two certificates are available. The Certificate in Legal Affairs Journalism is for law students who want to go into legal affairs journalism and legal publishing rather than into traditional law practice. The Certificate in Strategic Communication is for law students who want to practice as lobbyists or in corporations, administrative agencies, larger law firms, or other areas in which the strategic management of communications is particularly important.
Both certificates require law students to take at least 12 elective credits at the School of Journalism. Under the program, the School of Law will accept up to six of the 12 credits taken at the School of Journalism for credit toward the JD or LLM degree at the School of Law if the student has not already used this allocation by taking other non-Law School courses. Students will need to take the other six credits as extra courses because they want the certificate. Students must have an A or B average across journalism courses to be awarded the School of Journalism certificate.
The following schedules list the School of Journalism courses law students may take to earn the certificate. Actual course offering and availability varies by semester, and enrollment is subject to professor approval.
