When I first discussed graduate assistantships with
Suzette Heiman, she told me her project for the fall was a new-and-improved journalism alumni magazine. With all the excitement of the past few years (planning the centennial, producing the commemorative book), the magazine had fallen by the wayside, but it was time to relaunch. After a brief conversation, I was sold. The task was both daunting and exciting - the freedom to start from scratch combined with the fear of having no models - but as an aspiring magazine editor, leading the production of a publication from start to finish was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.
In keeping with the spirit of the Missouri School of Journalism and its drive to stay on top of the latest in technology and media, we chose an online product. What better way to stay current and also enhance our content with videos, photos and graphics? What better way to reach the largest audience possible and create conversation with our alumni? After all, this J-School prides itself on staying ahead of the media and technology curves.

We began with brainstorming and asking our distinguished faculty for ideas on exciting things at the School and attention-worthy accomplishments of grads who keep in touch. Turns out there's a lot to celebrate, as you can see from the many students, faculty and alumni we've highlighted in this issue. After settling on story ideas, it was time to find sources and write stories. With a team of three graduate students and 11 undergrads, we spent the semester working through interviews and drafts, collecting photos and videos, designing graphics and layouts.
With this publication, we tried to look at both the big picture and the small. We give you a snapshot of daily life in the J-School and photos to help you reminisce. We highlight the cutting-edge research, revamped curriculum, accomplished faculty and talented students. We look back at the history of the School and challenge you to test your knowledge. But we also explore happenings far from Columbia. Click through our pages to read about alumni in education, nonprofits and start-ups, alumni covering everything from award shows to international crises - even alumni who found love with other J-Schoolers.
We hope you come away from this publication with a few things in mind: First, the Missouri School of Journalism is - and always has been - the best. Our students continue to leave this place fully prepared for their careers and for success in a variety of fields. Second, a Missouri degree increases in value with each class of graduates. The School is constantly adapting and adding to its programs in order to keep up with the ever-changing field of journalism, and Missouri students are ready for the industry's challenges. Finally, although Missouri has evolved with the media landscape, in many ways it hasn't changed. Students still hang out at the Berg and eat at Shakespeare's, but more importantly, the core values have endured. Honesty, integrity, accuracy and service are instilled in students in all areas of media. The Missouri Method is just as important and relevant - and applied - as it was in 1908. In short, the School continues to live up to Walter Williams' ideals.
We hope you enjoy everything we've prepared. Please take the time to send us a note with your thoughts, and if you like what you see, keep an eye out for the next issue. With (we hope) some contributions and suggestions from alumni, another update on everything J-School should be on your screen next spring.
