Football Victory Provides J-Students with Learning Opportunity

To commemorate Missouri's 41-24 victory over Nebraska, the Missourian is producing a special four-page "When Tigers Roar" section.

Columbia, Mo. (Oct. 15, 2003) -- A special four-page section celebrating the Tigers victory over Nebraska on Oct. 11 is just another example of how Missouri Journalism students gain real world experience while in school.

"When Tigers Roar" will be published in the Thursday, Oct. 16, issue of the Columbia Missourian. Early promotions boasts, "Some news perishes: Dow hits 10,000. Some does not: Missouri 41, Nebraska 24."

"Students have been scrambling to respond in a special way to a huge community and campus event," said Tom Warhover, the paper's managing editor. "It adds a new learning dimension to reporting and writing for a daily newspaper."

The four-page keepsake will include poster-size, 4-color photographs, sports information and statistics and other game nuggets about the Tigers victory over the Huskers. The win was the Tigers' first against Nebraska since 1978 and their first win against a Top 10 opponent in 45 games.

Senior Maureen Fulton helped write some of the section's articles. "Knowing I'm writing a story that not only will be splashed across the front page, but also is so important to the city is much more than I expected when I came to Missouri for journalism," she said.
