Four Missouri Journalism Students Win in Hearst National Championships

Columbia, Mo. (June 21, 2004) - Four Missouri School of Journalism students placed in the Hearst National Writing, Photojournalism and Broadcast News Championships.

The Championships, the culmination of the 2003-04 journalism awards program, with more than 100 undergraduate colleges and universities competing under the auspices of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, were held in San Francisco.

The finalists were brought to San Francisco to demonstrate their writing, photography, radio and television skills in rigorous on-the-spot assignments. Assignments were decided by non-Hearst media professionals, also brought in to judge the students' work. The following are the Missouri winners and the scholarships they received:

National Writing Championship
Third Place: Ann Friedman, $3,000 scholarship.

National Television Broadcast News Championship
Third Place: Katie Piper, $3,000 scholarship.

National Writing Championship
Runner-Up: Carolyn Szczepanski, $1,500 scholarship.

Best Reporting Technique
Carolyn Szczepanski, for her article in the Columbia Missourian titled, "The Once and Future River," $1,000 award.

Television Broadcast News Championship
Runner-Up: Knez Walker, $1,500 scholarship.
