Magazine Students Visit 16 New York Magazines

Magazine students attended a campus roundtable event with editorial staff from Marie Claire.

Columbia, Mo. (March 8, 2005) -- Magazine Club students from the Missouri School of Journalism got a feel for winter in New York and life at a major magazine when 29 members visited Manhattan for their annual trip. The group visited 16 national, premier magazines. At each visit, they received a tour of the offices and a Q&A session with editors.

Kate Schweitzer, president of the Magazine Club, says the purpose of the five-day trip is to "gain a realistic idea of what it is like to work at the magazines we read every month and to build relationships with those working in the industry."

Several students, including Schweitzer, have received summer internships because of the trip. This year, more than five members conducted interviews with magazines for internship and job opportunities.

Students on the trip ranged from freshmen to seniors, but they all were able to learn more about their profession at each magazine. "At some magazines, you walk in and automatically know you would or wouldn't want to work there. Each magazine has its own style and you can get a feel for it in the first five seconds," said Hillary Robinson, a freshman Magazine Club member.

In addition to the visits, the club organized a roundtable discussion with Ed2010, a national networking group for aspiring editors who want to reach their dream magazine jobs by the year 2010. The Magazine Club, a campus chapter of Ed2010, met with editorial assistants from several New York magazines at RODEO Bar on Third Ave. to discuss the current state of the magazine industry, how to survive in the city and how to make the most of your journalistic experiences.

Faculty member Judy Bolch accompanied the students in preparation for the school's "Summer in New York" program. The program, which Bolch organized last summer, provides 20 MU journalism students with the opportunity to live and work in the city. The students also take a course, which allows them to visit more than 15 national media outlets.
