Missouri Journalism Students Win 16 Awards in SND Contest

Columbia, Mo. (May 10, 2005) -- The Society for News Design chapter at the Missouri School of Journalism recently hosted the annual College News Design Contest. The contest is a college version of SND's international competition. Judges looked at more than 750 entries from around the country and selected winners in daily and non-daily divisions. Categories covered news, sports, features and Web site design, photo spreads, information graphics, magazine design, redesigns and use of color and photography.

Among the daily newspapers, the most awards went to the University of Missouri, with 16. Ball State University received 10, and nine went to Michigan State University.

"In Mizzou's design and graphics classes, students learn to think visually. Design isn't about making things pretty. It's about understanding stories well enough to present them in an exciting, informative way. Good design is good journalism. It's awesome to see our students' good work recognized," said Joy Mayer, design editor for the Columbian Missourian.

  A photojournalism major from Bettendorf, Iowa, Gallagher will graduate May 13; he plans to begin a photo editing internship at The Sporting News in St. Louis later this month. Gallagher also won two College Photographer of the Year Contests, taking the Gold Sports Portfolio in 2004 and the Bronze Sports Portfolio in 2003.

  Engel is a magazine design major from Springfield, Mo. Turk is a graduate student on the magazine design track from Missoula, Mont.; she has a summer internship working for St. Louis and St. Louis Homes magazines. Engel and Turk are the current art directors of Vox.

  Kim, a graduating senior, is a magazine design major from the Chicago area.
