Salvo Named 2006 RTNDA Fellow, Wins National Internship at CBS Radio News

Columbia, Mo. (June 30, 2006) -- Hayley Salvo, a senior radio-television journalism major at the Missouri School of Journalism, was named the 2006 Rob Sunde Fellow at the recent Radio and Television News Directors Association's annual conference.

Salvo, from Carrollton, Texas, reports and anchors the news for KBIA radio, one of the most successful public radio stations in the nation and a 2006 national winner of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. She will graduate magna cum laude in August, and was inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha, a national journalism honor society that accepts the top ten percent of each graduating class in May.

"Everything I know about radio I learned from working at KBIA and imitating the public radio style. Commercial radio approaches news from an entirely different angle, and I hope to learn more about their techniques while at CBS," said Salvo.

As a Fellow, Salvo will work alongside Harvey Nagler, CBS' vice president for radio news, during a two-week internship for CBS Radio News in New York City in August.

"Hayley brings a lot of enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the station, and she has a knack for getting people to open up and tell her all kinds of stories. Hayley once produced a feature piece on a city bus driver that had some of the most memorable and best writing to come out of KBIA," said Sarah Ashworth, the station's news director and an assistant professor in the School's radio-television journalism emphasis area.

In 2005, RTNDA named Salvo as one of its 13 scholarship and fellowship winners from across the country, qualifying her as a finalist for the Rob Sunde Fellow program. RTNDA established the program in memory of Sunde, a longtime broadcast news executive and former chairman of RTNDA who dedicated himself to mentoring the next generation of journalists.

Salvo also is the treasurer for the School's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and co-founder of Misery Weekly, a campus satirical news magazine.

RTNDA is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. The organization represents local and network news executives in broadcasting, cable and other electronic media in more than 30 countries.
