Missouri Journalism Reporters Earn Seven Awards in National Society of Professional Journalists' Competition

Columbia, Mo. (May 29, 2007) -- Five Missouri School of Journalism students and one School-affiliated media outlet recently brought home seven Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists' national competition.

Recognizing student journalists in 39 categories, SPJ announced the winners of the national Mark of Excellence competition at its 2007 Convention and National Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C. To become eligible for the national competition, these entries already had placed first in SPJ's Region 7 Mark of Excellence competition.

"This is a stunningly impressive performance and a testament to the quality work our newsrooms produce on a daily basis," said Charles Davis, associate professor of journalism studies and adviser to Missouri's SPJ student chapter. "The combination of excellent students and faculty with real-world experience yields award winning journalism."

The competition was open to any student enrolled in a college or university and pursuing an academic degree in 2006. Students who have had full-time, professional journalism experience outside of internships are not eligible, however.

Missouri Journalism students competing in SPJ's Mark of Excellence competition can submit work prepared as part of their experiences in the School's various community newsrooms. Radio-television students, for instance, enter stories they broadcast on either KOMU, the only university-owned network affiliate in the country, or KBIA, Columbia's award-winning NPR station. Writing and photojournalism contestants submit examples of their stories and photos from the Columbia Missourian, the city's faculty-run, student-staffed morning newspaper, or one of several other publications affiliated with the School.

April 19, 2007: Missouri Journalism Students Top List of Recent Hearst Journalism Award-Winners Seniors Ryan Famuliner and Ryan Kruger placed third and 11th in the Television Broadcast II Competition, respectively. Meanwhile, senior Matthew Jarzemsky earned fourth in the Personality/Profile Writing Competition, and sophomore Sean Powers took 14th in the Radio II Competition. [More]

April 2, 2007: Missouri Journalism Senior Wins National American Advertising Federation Internship Senior Katie Roehrick, a strategic communication major from Kansas City, Mo., received a 2007 Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Internship in advertising. Roehrick will spend 10 weeks working in the advertising department of The Los Angeles Times. In addition, she will receive $1,500 in May to help cover moving and living expenses and a $4,000 salary over the course of the internship. [More]

March 29, 2007: Record Number of Missouri Journalism Students Win Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Editing Internships A record 17 Missouri School of Journalism students have been selected for the prestigious 2007 Dow Jones Newspaper Fund summer internships in news, sports and online copy editing. This year, the Missouri Journalism recipients were among 105 students selected from an applicant pool of more than 600. Each will receive pre-internship training and a weekly minimum salary of $350 for 10 weeks. Interns who return to college full-time the following fall will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Newspaper Fund. [More]

March 5, 2007: Columbia Missourian Sports Section Wins National Award The Columbia Missourian sports staff scored a national award from the Associated Press Sports Editors' (APSE) annual contest, which took place Feb. 26-28 in Long Beach, Calif. APSE named the Columbia Missourian one of the top 20 Sunday sports sections in the country among papers with a circulation of less than 40,000. [More]

Sept. 18, 2006: SPJ Honors Davis with President's Award Calling him a "tireless worker," outgoing president Dave Carlson presented Charles Davis with the President's Award at the recent Society of Professional Journalists' national convention in Chicago.
