New Fellowship Announced for Adelante!
Fellow to Serve as Editor of Spanish-English Newsmagazine, Earn Master's Degree
Columbia, Mo. (July 30, 2007) -- The Missouri School of Journalism announces a new two-year Adelante! fellowship for an early career journalist who is bilingual in Spanish and English and wishes to pursue a master's degree in journalism.
Adelante! is an award-winning bilingual publication dedicated to building a sense of community among the Spanish-speaking people of mid-Missouri and those who are interested in Latin culture. Published monthly September through May as part of the Columbia Missourian, this student-staffed newsmagazine seeks to bridge the cultural and language gaps many Hispanics find when they locate to this region.
The fellowship will provide a rare opportunity for someone to build a career working in the growing field of Spanish-language journalism, said Katherine Reed, an assistant professor and faculty adviser of Adelante!.
"Adelante! is concerned about immigration issues, language barriers and the accomplishments of Hispanics in the central part of our state," noted Reed. "The fellow will play a very important role in identifying issues and subjects of importance to our readers and helping the student staff cover these subjects."
The fellowship begins in January 2008. While working on a master's degree, the Adelante! fellow will act as managing editor and provide leadership to undergraduate and graduate journalism students who work on the publication.
The two-year fellowship awards a stipend of $5,000 per semester, or $10,000 for each academic year. Because Adelante! is not published in the summer, the fellow can pursue an internship or other opportunities during that time. Additional benefits include a complete tuition waiver of resident and non-resident educational fees. In most cases, this amounts to an educational fee waiver of approximately $13,000 per year. International candidates will be considered.
Native Spanish speakers with a strong interest in Hispanic issues will be given preference in the selection process. The deadline for applications is Sept. 1. March 26, 2007: Master's Student Wins Society of American Business Editors and Writers Contest Isabel Ordóñez, a second-year master's student at the Missouri School of Journalism, has won first place in the student category of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers' (SABEW) annual Best in Business contest. Ordóñez won $250 for her story on how poor Latin American men are being recruited to fill dangerous jobs as security guards for contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sept. 26, 2006: Journalism Students Compete With Industry Professionals - And Win The Columbia Missourian brought home 36 awards from the Missouri Press Association's Annual Better Newspaper Contest. The Missourian garnered 13 first-place finishes in a variety of categories, including content, design, photography, and beat reports such as religion, sports, rural life, and business. A first-place award in the General Excellence category highlighted the Missourian's performance, which also included several second place, third place and honorable mention awards. May 1, 2006: Sorbara Named Top Copy Editing Student in U.S. Diego Sorbara has received the $2,500 Aubespin scholarship, given to the top copy editing student in the U.S. by the American Copy Editors Society. Sorbara is a newspaper journalism student at the Missouri School of Journalism. As part of his journalism coursework, Sorbara works as a reporter, copy editor, designer and assistant news editor for the Columbia Missourian, the city's daily morning newspaper, and its bilingual magazine, Adelante. Oct. 27, 2005: Columbia Missourian Wins 27 Awards in 2005 Better Newspapers Contest The Columbia Missourian, the Missouri School of Journalism's working newspaper lab for students in news-editorial, design, information graphics and photojournalism, took home 27 awards in the 2005 Missouri Press Foundation's Better Newspapers contest. Student reporters and photographers won the awards in 19 categories for daily newspapers, competing mainly in the small newspaper category. A highlight for the Missourian was sweeping the top three places in the Class 1 "Best Sports Feature Story" and "Best Investigative Reporting" categories. [More]
