Missouri School of Journalism Welcomes Two New Faculty Members

Columbia, Mo. (March 14, 2008) -- The Missouri School of Journalism welcomed two new faculty members for the winter 2008 semester. Mark Horvit joined the journalism studies faculty as an associate professor and executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors, and Karen Mitchell joined the convergence journalism faculty as an assistant professor.

Horvit serves as the executive director for Investigative Reporters and Editors, a professional organization of journalists headquartered at the School. He came to Missouri from the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, where he was the projects editor. An accomplished investigative reporter and editor, Horvit previously has worked at the Panama City (Fla.) News Herald, the Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times, The Houston Post, the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune and The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer. As IRE's executive director, Horvit supervises 12 full-time staff members; runs IRE's renowned professional programs, publications and Web site; and oversees the $1.4 million budget, fund-raising campaigns and the more than $3 million endowment fund.

Mitchell, a 25-year veteran photojournalist, previously co-taught the School's convergence fundamentals course while completing her master's degree in journalism. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Mitchell worked as a photojournalist at the Des Moines Register and Gannett Newspapers in Rochester, N.Y. She eventually returned to the Register and worked her way up through the management ranks in photography, serving as photo editor, assistant director of photography and director of photography. Mitchell then moved to the Associated Press, first as assistant state photo editor in New York and then as state photo editor in Chicago.

Horvit and Mitchell join more than 80 professional practice and tenure-track faculty members who bring their professional and academic expertise into the School's classrooms, real-media outlets and affiliated organizations.
