Missouri Journalism Faculty Members Named 2009-2010 Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellows

Columbia, Mo. (July 16, 2009) -- Three members of the Missouri School of Journalism faculty are among the six Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellows (RJI) selected for the 2009-2010 academic year. The group of journalists and scholars will research new technology-based trends and methods in journalism and strategic communication.

Jacqui Banaszynski	Clyde Bentley	Stephanie Padgett

Jacqui Banaszynski, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who holds the Knight Chair in Editing at the School, will study how news outlets can better partner with citizens to tell stories in the digital age.

Clyde Bentley, associate professor of print and digital news, will examine how journalists are using the cell phone to disseminate news and how news coverage can be expanded on mobile platforms.

Stephanie Padgett, director of client strategy for Empower MediaMarketing in Cincinnati, will research and test an innovative ideas for increasing online advertising revenue in mid-size to small markets. Her project promises to provide greater benefits to the news organization, the reader and the advertiser. In addition to her work in the industry, Stephanie is an adjunct professor at the School through an executive-on-loan program.

RJI was launched in 2004 with a grant of $31 million from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. It partners with media organizations and nonprofits to develop and test ways to improve journalism and advertising through media technology.

Bananskyski, Bentley and Padgett will collaborate with the other Fellows: Michelle McLellan of the Frontline Editors Project, Sean Patrick Reily of the Los Angeles Times and Michael Skoler, most recently with American Public Media.

April 30, 2009: Missouri School of Journalism Students Develop, Market Real World iPhone Applications Last September more than 70 University of Missouri students started the competition to develop, test and market native iPhone applications. The project is co-sponsored by the Reynolds Journalism Institute, Apple and AT&T. Judges will pick the main prize winner, but the team that wins the People's Choice will keep the coveted iPhones.
