Doctoral Timetable

First Semester

  • Take JOURN 9000 Doctoral Proseminar I.
  • Take JOURN 9087 Doctoral Research Seminar .
  • Be employed as a research or teaching assistant.

Second Semester

  • Take JOURN 9006 Doctoral Proseminar II.
  • Take JOURN 9010 Doctoral Seminar (required this semester).
  • Take JOURN 9087 Doctoral Research Seminar.
  • File D1 form, by the end of the semester.
  • Be employed as a research or teaching assistant.
  • Evaluate teaching level (for students with prior teaching experience).

Third Semester

  • File D2 form by the end of the semester.
  • Take JOURN 9087 Doctoral Research Seminar.
  • Be employed as a research or teaching assistant.

Fourth Semester

  • Take JOURN 9087 Doctoral Research Seminar.
  • Take comps by the end of the fourth or the beginning of the fifth semester, including the oral portion of the examination.
  • Be employed as a research or teaching assistant.

Fifth and Subsequent Semesters

  • Be continuously enrolled; encouraged to participate in JOURN 9087 Doctoral Research Seminar.
  • Meet with the student’s committee to approve dissertation proposal.
  • Write and defend dissertation.
  • Continue research or teaching assistantship through the sixth semester.
