The program allows you to participate in a remarkable experience abroad, engaging in both class work and real work experience. The opportunity to work in an international environment and further develop your journalism skills while using your Spanish firsthand makes this program an unique and exciting new addition to our journalism study abroad programs.
Gain bilingual professional experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina while earning credit toward your degree. This program consists of an internship, Spanish language immersion classes tailored to journalism, seminars led by an Argentine journalist and a journalism course taught by a member of the MU Journalism faculty.
Students will have the opportunity to earn credit in both the Journalism and Spanish departments during their time in Buenos Aires.
Program
The summer program works with a number of media organizations, advertising agencies and NGOs in Buenos Aires to offer students internships in all sequences: news/editorial, magazine, photojournalism, online journalism, broadcast, radio and advertising. Students have the opportunity to publish their work and gain experience. They will also develop skills in bilingual journalism that will be invaluable to editors as media outlets look to cover a growing Hispanic population and Latin American interest in the United States.
Area
From the cobble-stoned streets of San Telmo to the tin-roofed brightly colored buildings of La Boca to the burgeoning new red brick offices and restaurants of Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires is a collection of neighborhoods of distinct history and character. Calle Florida is a bustling tourist mecca of shops and cafés, Calle Corrientes is a host of bookstores and theaters with internationally recognized ballet, opera, musicals and plays, and foreign and national films. Recoleta combines history with modernity: fashionable new design shops, restaurants and nightlife are a stone's throw from the historic Recoleta cemetery and parks that overflow with artisans on the weekends. Likewise, upscale Palermo's parks fill with artisans and the bars and clubs surrounding Plaza Serrano temporarily clear out to make way for originally designed clothing shops side-by-side with fashionable new boutiques and the hip restaurants of Calle Thames.
Buenos Aires, once called the "Paris of South America" is the capital of Argentina and the gateway to the southern cone of Latin America. A dynamic city with a rich culture, history and political climate, Buenos Aires is rife with stories.
Eligibility
Students with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have completed the first course in their sequence are eligible for admission to a study abroad internship program. Students with slightly lower GPA may be considered if their journalism GPA is above 3.0. All students must be in good academic standing.
Students do not need to be fluent in Spanish, but they must have some Spanish-language background. High school coursework and some college conversational classes are recommended.
Course Credit
Students can earn up to nine credit hours (Journalism Elective and Spanish credits).
All students are required to take JOURN 4658 International Journalism for three credit hours as part of the program.
Spanish credits on this program include 3150, 3160, 4960.
Costs
MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than credits taken on-campus at MU, but include new experiences, cultures, languages, and often-times housing, flight costs, and other program-related costs. It's highly recommended that you outline a budget for yourself of what you would spend during a semester here at MU and compare it to study abroad costs.
Because this is a fee-paying program, it is more expensive than an exchange program. The fee for enrolling is approximately $4,625 for the summer session. This fee includes housing (utilities, local phone calls, high-speed Internet and cable), airport pick-up/drop-off, internship placement, Spanish immersion and Argentine journalist seminars.
In addition, you will be billed MU educational fees for the credit hours taken and a $75 MU Study Abroad program fee through your MU account. This fee covers MU orientation, ISIC card, faculty expenses, administration, and assistance.
Additional expenses to consider for this program include flight, personal and internship-related transportation, insurance, meals, and other miscellaneous expenses.
Please note that there are scholarships and other financial options available to you to help make study abroad part of your college experience.
Financial Aid
The financial aid you normally receive for your classes at MU is usually applicable. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs of studying abroad. Please meet with the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office (11 Jesse Hall) for more complete information: 573-882-7506.
The School of Journalism offers need-based travel scholarships each semester. Applications are available on our Web site. You can also apply for additional scholarships through the MU International Center (Memorial Union). Watch our Web site for special program scholarship announcements each semester.
Housing
Housing will be provided in either apartments or host-family stays. Upon arrival they will be escorted to their housing, experience a city tour, have access to student travel packages and have 24-emergency access to a bilingual-staff member. Public transportation of subway and bus is within walking distance of all housing placements.
