Spring Semester Program Dates:
Jan. 13, 2010 - April 30, 2010

England (London) Fall/Spring Semester Internship Program The Missouri London Program allows you to participate in a remarkable experience abroad, engaging in both class work and real work experience! You will be placed in an internship in your sequence. The opportunity to work in an international environment and demonstrate your journalism skills while getting to know Brits first-hand, makes this program our most popular.

In addition to the internship, you will also take two courses, International Issues Reporting and British Life & Culture. The first is a journalism course taught by an MU Journalism faculty member participating in the program. It will examine the British media system (all sequences) and incorporate an American comparison. The second, British Life & Culture (BLC), will present several British lecturers speaking on various topics relating to the history of Britain and traditions that can be seen in the culture today. Weekly course fieldtrips accompany this course and further exemplify lecture subjects.

CAPA International Education

For almost 40 years CAPA has provided students with the learning experience of a lifetime. CAPA delivers the best in education and experience both in and out of the classroom through the use of a proven educational system called My Education, which combines theme based learning with cultural experiences connecting the classroom the cultural environment. As such, CAPA is one of the strongest internship providers in London.

The London Internship Program is led by Missouri School of Journalism faculty members. Courses are instructed at CAPA's educational center in London. The CAPA campus is located in the Kensington district of West London, and has fully equipped classrooms, a faculty office, a computer lab and resource room, the CAPAccino student lounge, wireless Internet access, and local library access. The facilities are housed within two adjoining Victorian townhouses which were refurbished at the start of 2009. The campus is well served by public transportation, including three Underground lines and several bus routes, providing easy access to all parts of the city.

Students live within commuting distance of the center in shared apartments, or in dormitories.

Area

Walking past the reconstructed Globe Theatre, once home to famous works of London playwright William Shakespeare, and following the path along the river Thames, leads you beyond the world-famous Tate Modern Museum and finally under the enormous London Eye, the largest Ferris wheel in the world, which towers over the city's skyline. Crossing the river, you will be met by a crowd of souvenir peddlers, anxious to sell you miniature Big Bens and bags of roasted almonds. Once across the bridge, you now bear witness to the historic and still active Houses of Parliament, the towering structure of Big Ben and finally Westminster Abbey. Can you imagine that seeing all this is possible in less than an hour of walking? Tied together by one of the oldest and most effective underground transportation systems in the world, the London Tube, as a student you will be able to explore all that London has to offer. The city of London is truly a mix of new and old, of fast-paced business and of slow moving pubs. To experience it all, there is no better way than to spend time as a student in the Missouri London Program, submersing yourself in a culture rich in history and budding with modern amenities.

Eligibility

Students with a minimum of 3.0 GPA who have completed the first course in their sequence are eligible for admission to a study abroad internship program. Students with slightly lower GPA may be considered if their journalism GPA is above 3.0. All students must be in good academic standing.

Course Credit

You will earn 12 credit hours, nine Journalism Elective credits and three hours Upperlevel Non-Journalism credits.

The internship earns you six hours of Journalism Elective credit. In addition, you will take two courses already prepared for you: International Issues Reporting course (three credits journalism elective) and British Life & Culture course (three credits of either Upperlevel Humanities or Social Science credit).

Costs

MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than credits taken on-campus at MU, but include new experiences, cultures, languages, and often times housing, flight costs, and other program related costs. It's highly recommended that you outline a budget for yourself of what you would spend during a semester here at MU and compare it to study abroad costs.

Because this is a fee paying program, it is more expensive than an exchange program. The CAPA program fee is approximately $8,395 which includes housing, internship, program-related activities, on-site orientation and assistance, and housing deposit fee. In addition, you will be billed MU educational fees (12 credits) and a $500 MU Study Abroad fee. Additional expenses to consider for this program include international airfare, personal and internship-related transportation, insurance, meals, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Please note that there are scholarships and other financial options available to you to help make study abroad part of your college experience!
