Theresa Berens Named Student Designer of the Year and Vox Magazine Named Best Student-Designed Publication

Columbia, Mo. (April 27, 2012) — Missouri School of Journalism students won 33 awards in 16 categories in the annual College News Design Contest, co-sponsored by the Society of News Design. The awards recognize the best design work done by students at campus publications or during internships.

Master’s student Theresa Berens was named the “Student Designer of the Year.” The judges commented, “She has solid, solid work. The choices she makes are always appropriate for topic matter. This would get a hard look at a professional competition. It goes above and beyond what the rest of her peers are doing, and that’s why it stands out. She has branded her design.” Berens will receive a travel grant to attend the SND annual conference to be held this year in Cleveland.

Vox magazine was named the best student-designed magazine of the year, winning first place in the “Overall Design of a Magazine” category. Theresa Berens, Stefanie Kienstra and Nick Williams created the entry.

Missouri journalism students enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the contest.

Christopher Roll, who placed second in the “Illustration” category, noted, “It was a fun experience and the only honor greater than seeing my work in print was placing second.”

LeeAnn Elias says that the experience was “extremely intimidating and at times disheartening, but incredibly helpful because you get to see the impact your work has on an audience unfamiliar with who you are or what you do.” Elias placed in several categories.
