Jessica Reese Places in Top 10 of Hearst Radio News and Features Competition
Her Winning Entry Focused on Women’s Issues and Politics
Columbia, Mo. (Jan. 14, 2013) — Missouri School of Journalism senior Jessica Reese placed in the top 10 of the Radio News and Features Competition and Television Features Competition in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation‘s Journalism Awards Program.
Reese’s entry competed against 45 others to earn ninth in the radio broadcast competition. She receives a certificate of merit.
Her entry consisted of two stories aired on KBIA-FM during the 2012 election season. One featured Republican women in the Mid-Missouri area. They spoke about their concerns for the election, especially in light of the media hype around the Republican party and women’s issues. The other story analyzed the first debate in Missouri’s senate race between incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill and opponent Todd Akin.
Reese is a radio-television journalism major and peace studies minor from Portland, Ore. She interned at CBS Radio New York and SiriusXM in New York City during summer 2012. She also interned at CBS News London and has reported for KOMU-TV and KBIA-FM. She plans to pursue a career in the broadcast field in New York City after she graduates in May.
KBIA-FM is an NPR-member station and carries programming from Public Radio International and other providers. It is owned by the University of Missouri.
The judges, all professionals in radio and television, were Edward Esposito, vice president, Information Media, Rubber City Radio Group, Akron, Ohio; Kate O’Brian, senior vice president, ABC News, New York; and Fred Young, retired senior vice president of news, Hearst-Argyle Television, Yardley, Pa.
The 2012-13 broadcast news competitions are held in 106 member colleges and universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs.
