Missouri Journalism Students Cover SEC Basketball Tournament in Nashville

Reporters File Multimedia Stories for the Columbia Missourian and KOMU-TV

Columbia, Mo. (March 15, 2013) — A car carrying Brendan Meyer and Justin Yang, the men’s basketball beat writers for the Columbia Missourian this season, and Greg Kendall-Ball, photographer, left early yesterday morning for what could, depending on the University of Missouri Tigers, be an extended stay in Nashville.

March 2013: Missouri vs. Texas A&M
Missouri photojournalism student Greg Kendall-Ball captured this shot of Missouri guard Earnest Ross diving for a ball with Texas A&M forward Jarod Jahns during the first half of the Tigers’ matchup against the Aggies.

The 62-50 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies in the second round of the SEC Tournament ensures one more night.

The trio is joined by KOMU-TV‘s Jake Schlegel and Peter Terpstra, who file stories live for the evening newscasts, with game highlights and post-game interviews.

The opportunity to cover the SEC tournament is part of the Missouri School of Journalism experience, where students gain hands-on experience in real-media outlets.

Nine o’clock games are deadline nightmares, said Greg Bowers, associate professor and the Missourian’s sports editor. To accommodate the schedule, one writer files an early story for the print edition and then the other one develops a Web story that will appear, exclusively, on columbiamissourian.com. Kendall-Ball sends images at halftime for the online update.

Tonight’s game against No. 3-seed Ole Miss has the same 9 p.m. start time, but because the Missourian doesn’t have a print edition on Saturday, all coverage will appear on columbiamissourian.com.

The rest of the weekend? That depends on the Tigers.
