Newseum Recognizes Recent Columbia Missourian Front Page to Be Among World’s Top 10 Designs of the Day
The Page Featured the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington in 1963
Columbia, Mo. (Sept. 4, 2013) — The Newseum recognized the Columbia Missourian‘s front page featuring the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington in 1963 to be among the top 10 designs of the day on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Each day, more than 800 newspapers worldwide submit their front pages to the Newseum, a news museum based in Washington, for the Today’s Front Pages Gallery. The Missourian is eligible to submit its front page because it publishes more than once a week and is a general-interest community newspaper.
The Newseum chooses a theme and an editor picks his or her favorite designs based on that theme or topic for the Today’s Top Ten Front Pages gallery. On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the theme was the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
The centerpiece was a story of Missouri residents remembering their experiences at the March or listening to it. The design featured an aerial shot of the 1963 march from The Associated Press archives.
Master’s student Gwen Girsdansky designed the page with assistance from associate director of photography and master’s student Mark Kauzlarich.
“It’s always a great accomplishment to be selected as one of the Newseum’s Top Ten, but especially on this particular day when so many incredible pages were produced to commemorate the anniversary of the March on Washington,” said Erica Mendez Babcock, the Missourian’s design editor. “I am very proud of our students for this achievement so early in the semester.”
