School Launches New Web Site for Health Communications Research

Columbia, Mo. (March 16, 2004) — The Health Communication Research Center (HCRC) launched a new website featuring the latest information in health news and health communication research.

“Our goal with this site is prevention. We want people to learn more about health issues and diseases and how to deal with them,” said Jon Stemmle, HCRC director of communications.

The site features grant summaries of research projects headed by Missouri Journalism and School of Nursing faculty and researchers from partnering universities. Research findings and data from these projects will be added to the site as the information becomes available. Additional health news resources are available through links to organizations with which the HCRC affiliates. The site also provides information on funding agencies for current and upcoming research projects.

One of the grants, funded by the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center is a collaborative research effort between Missouri journalism associate professors Margaret Duffy and Michael J. Grinfeld. Duffy’s research focuses on increasing awareness on disability issues and its coverage in the media. Grinfeld’s research includes creating a unique website providing preventative information, care options, and resources available to children suffering from juvenile arthritis.

Research by assistant professor Cynthia Frisby on communication strategies and their effectiveness in increasing breast cancer screenings among African-American women is another example of a health-related study posted on the site.

“The HCRC plans to be on the cutting edge of health communication research and our website will reflect that,” said Stemmle. “We welcome suggestions as to how we can enhance the Web site to bring more health information to the public,” Stemmle said.
