Journalism Faculty Member Brian Brooks Co-authors New Edition of Leading Editing Text

Columbia, Mo. (Aug. 23, 2004) — The Art of Editing, the 8th edition of the leading text on the subject, addresses convergence that is taking place among print media, radio and television, and the Web.

The book is co-authored by Brian S. Brooks, a news-editorial faculty member and associate dean for undergraduate studies at the Missouri School of Journalism, and James L. Pinson, Ph.D. ’96, who serves as a professor at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Jack Z. Scissors, a co-author of this book from the first edition, was too ill to participate in the revision and died shortly before publication.

“We continue to stress the importance of editing as an art while recognizing the big changes taking place in the media industry,” Brooks said.

The text is designed to help students find their first jobs as well as a refresher and update for professional editors. The contents are divided into five parts:

  • Editing in the Age of Convergence
  • The Fundamentals of Editing
  • The Visual Side of Editing
  • Editing for Different Media
  • Editors’ Other Hats.

There is one constant throughout all editions, Brooks said. “Those who can edit, and edit well, have no trouble finding jobs.”

The Art of Editing is published by Allyn and Bacon, a division of Pearson Education Inc., and is available through bookstores.
