Columbia, Mo. (Oct. 2, 2014) — The Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City have selected Larry Moore, noted newscaster on KMBC-TV, to be the 50th recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Kansan Citian Award.

Moore, MA ’68, joined KMBC-TV in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, after graduation. He rose through the ranks to become primary news anchor, a position he held for 41 years until his retirement in 2013.

Moore was involved in the coverage of almost every major news story that affected the Kansas City area, including the Plaza flood of 1977, the Coates House fire of 1978, the Hyatt skywalk disaster, the flood of 1993, the plane crash and death of Gov. Mel Carnahan and many more.

To cement Moore’s legacy at the Missouri School of Journalism, KMBC-TV established an endowed fund of $25,000 in Moore’s name. The fund, called the “KMBC Larry Moore Journalism Scholarship,” is intended to provide merit-based assistance to students in the Missouri School of Journalism who are residents of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Kent Collins, chair of the radio-television journalism faculty, praised Moore for the example he has led for Missouri Journalism students.

“Dozens of Missouri School of Journalism graduates have cycled through Larry’s KMBC station over the past 25 years,” Collins said. “Larry has been a role model to all of them. Young producers and reporters and anchors from the J-School’s radio and television journalism faculty have learned from Larry’s style of good journalism.”

Moore has praised the Missouri School of Journalism for its Missouri Method, giving him a hands-on approach to learning the skills needed in such a fast developing media as television news.

The Mizzou Alumni Association honored Moore with its Faculty-Alumni Award in 2002. To support this scholarship, visit the Giving to MU website and type “KMBC Larry Moore Journalism Scholarship” in the comments box.
