KBIA-FM Wins 16 Awards from the Kansas City Press Club

Alumnus Dick Nelson Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Kansas City (July 20, 2016) — KBIA won 16 awards from the Kansas City Press Club in its annual Heart of America Awards. The contest honors outstanding journalism published in eastern Kansas and western Missouri. The Kansas City Press Club, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, presented the awards at a banquet on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City on Saturday, July 9.

KBIA-FM is one of the Missouri School of Journalism’s nine professional hands-on outlets that serve as learning laboratories for students.

Dick Nelson, MA ’71, was honored with the Press Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A retired journalist and educator, he has served as a board member of the Press Club since 1989. In accepting the award, Nelson said of the Press Club, “I’ve found it an invaluable resource in keeping up with issues of free speech, freedom of expression and transparency of government actions. It has provided a perspective on those issues that is sometimes missing in the hustle and bustle of the daily newsroom.”
