Professor, Doctoral Student Win National Recognition for Media History Research

The Scholars Were Recognized at the American Journalism Historians Association National Convention

St. Petersburg, Fla. (Nov. 28, 2016) — A Missouri School of Journalism professor and a doctoral student are among the winning scholars who presented at the American Journalism Historians Association national convention in St. Petersburg, Florida. A total of six category wins and 12 honorable mentions were presented for research on a wide range of topics in the area of media history.

The J. William Snorgrass Memorial Award for the Outstanding Paper on a Minorities Topic went to Assistant Professor Cristina Mislan of Missouri, Associate Professor Jinx Broussard of Louisiana State, and doctoral student Rachel Grant of Missouri for “Larger than Life:” Celebrity Journalism, Gender and Black Politics in Fay M. Jackson’s Hollywood Adventures, 1933-1935.

The trio also won honorable mention in the Wm. David Sloan Award for Top Faculty Paper category for the same paper.

Founded in 1981, the American Journalism Historians Association seeks to advance education and research in mass communication history. Members work to raise historical standards and ensure that all scholars and students recognize the vast importance of media history and apply this knowledge to the advancement of society.
